Indeed, DC has not been in the best shape for the past few years. The future is bleak with lousy planning, CEO changes, execution problems, and substandard movies. However, one film that came out in the previous year gives us a little hope – The Batman.
In the time leading up to Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman, fans were highly critical. Many talented actors have played the character, but this vigilante’s mask has probably been passed around the most. Fans’ frustration was understandable, and no one had their hopes up. That may have worked to the advantage of “The Batman.”
Like always, The Dark Knight swooped in and saved the day. The movie was a massive success and gave us some of the best cinematography and storytelling in a long time. A visual masterpiece, to say the least.
One reason for this movie’s positive reception is the excellent cast. There was much doubt about Pattinson taking up the role, and his experience from Twilight wasn’t going to amount to much.
However, he surprised everyone and gave one of the best performances of his career. Zoë Kravitz, who plays Catwoman, was simply bewitching in the role, and Riddler, played by Paul Dano, was the perfect menacing antithesis to the young caped crusader.

Other notable castings were Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, and Andy Serskins as a great Alfred Pennyworth. All these characters had a considerable amount of screen time and did justice to their roles. There was one more person who had a deleted scene and yet, left the fans reeling. The Joker, played by Barry Keoghan.
The villainous clown has been played by some of the greatest actors of our generation. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix have done outstanding jobs, and to follow their performances is no easy task. However, it seemed that Barry Keoghan was more than up for the task.
He did not make a proper appearance in the movie’s original cut, just a small interaction with the Riddler. Fortunately, we later got a deleted scene from the movie where we see Batman speak to Keoghan’s Joker directly. Barry Keoghan impressed everyone with his acting and properly embodied the gritty, scary supervillain. He almost seems perfect for the role. The funniest thing, however, is that Barry Keoghan did not even audition for the role.
In a recent video released by the actor via GQ UK, it is clear that he originally auditioned for the role of Riddler, a part he lost to Paul Dano. This was a blessing in disguise, and Keoghan now had the opportunity to play an even more profound character.

The footage is Keoghan’s audition tape, where we see him dressed, similar to a comic book version of the Riddler. With a walking stick in hand, the actor is seen walking through the halls of an apartment building with a notorious aura around him. Every step he takes feels daunting, and in the latter half, we get to see the mischievous look on his face.
Being an actor with such caliber and range, we’re confident that Barry Keoghan would easily be able to play the role of the Riddler. However, the mischievous smile was more than enough to know what character he was best suited for.
We’ve seen many other actors lose the character they auditioned for but then got into an even better role. Tom Hiddleston is another good example of this.

The Batman’s noir-Esque theme sets the perfect ambiance for Keoghan’s Joker to thrive. It will be interesting to see how the character will be developed. We’ve seen the dance between the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince many times, but this one might be special.
