Political Commentator Matt Walsh says Anime is Satanic & Fans Aren't Backing Down

The Daily Wire columnist and political commentator Matt Walsh sparked controversy in the anime community after his recent remarks on anime and why he thinks adults should refrain from watching cartoons in general.

Matt Walsh has been previously under scrutiny for his anti-transgender theories and ideas by writing a children’s book Johnny the Walrus. Walsh recently appeared on a live stream where he was answering viewers’ questions.

Upon being asked what his opinion on anime is as it’s really popular among teens and young adults, he responded, “I think it’s all Satanic. I have no argument for it — I have no argument for why it’s Satanic, it just seems that way to me.”

The columnist further said that all anime to him seems ‘bizarre’ and ‘creepy.’ He thinks young adults “should not watch anime or any other kinds of cartoons” at all.

The anime community was quick to respond, as many fans defended the argument and weren’t ready to take dirt on the matter.

Take a look.

I think Daily Wire is all Satanic. I have no argument for it – it just seems that way to me. https://t.co/K4kwhDzoAa

Some of these responses are hilarious!

I can just imagine Matt Walsh watching My Neighbor Totoro and yelling at the top of his lungs “THIS IS THE WORK OF SATAN!” https://t.co/BwPp6ImZzL

Or what happens when the Church of Satan itself tweets this on Walsh’s take on ‘Satanism’:

Fairly safe to assume this guy has no idea what Satanism even is. https://t.co/J383YPtZpY

Walsh, however, wasn’t silent on the matter as he responded to the criticism saying, “I’m catching some heat because I said that anime is satanic. I just want to clarify that yes it will literally lead to demonic possession in upwards of 87 percent of cases, studies show.”

Hours later, he went a step further.

I want to apologize for singling out anime. I actually think all cartoons are satanic.

It’s not the first time American politics has targeted Anime to spark a debate. In 2016, Republican strategist Rick Wilson gave an analogy describing Trump’s supporters as “childless single men who masturbate to anime.”

Republican representative Paul Gosar also posted a parody video showcasing his political rivals as Titans who are killed, similar to Attack on Titan’s opening sequence. Consequently, Gosar was removed from the committee assignments last year. Eric Trump, son of former US president Donald Trump, had also claimed that Google is manipulating Americans to associate mobs with anime. By entering the keyword ‘mob,’ images of Mob Psycho 100’s characters appeared in the search results.
