The tradition of end-credits scenes has become so deeply rooted in Marvel movies that you won’t find anyone leaving their seats until staff members shoo everyone out. Sometimes the clips serve as a teaser for the next film or as straightforward fluff content.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 holding the record for most credit scenes, fans expected the same from Vol. 3. Rather than going overboard with 5 clips, director James Gunn created two end-credits scenes, which are essential to watch for any Marvel fan.
Before I discuss the bonus clips, I have to explain what happened in the movie to build up to the scenes. So read on if you live life on the edge. If you want to remain untarnished, then avoid the spoilers.
[SPOILER ALERT]
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows the team building a safe haven in Knowhere, but their efforts are interrupted when Rocket is left severely injured by an attack. Due to a fail-safe switch installed in him, he can’t be cured as it risks an explosion.
Skipping to the finale, the heroes were able to save Rocket and everyone’s lives. However, it is revealed that each Guardian is now ready to part ways with the team. Peter wants to return to Earth to meet his grandpa, so he appoints Rocket as the next captain.
Mantis and her new Abilisk friends also go on a self-discovery journey. Nebula and Drax decide to care for the children they rescued. Gamora rejoins the Ravagers.
Only Rocket and Groot are left, but the mid-credits scene shows that they won’t be alone for long.
How Many End-Credit Scenes Do Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Have?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has two end-credits scenes. A mid-credits scene showing the future of the Guardians, and a post-credits scene that displays Quill’s reunion with his grandfather on Earth.
Mid-Credits Scene: The New Guardians
The mid-credits scene shows Rocket and the new recruits for the Guardians. The new team includes Cosmo, a telepathic space dog, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, and a massive Groot. Another new member is a Star Kid who was rescued from the High Revolutionary’s clutches. The new Star Kid remains unnamed, and we don’t know their powers yet.
The team can be seen discussing their favorite songs, and Rocket expresses his love for “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone. As Rocket starts the music, a battle scene between the Guardians and a horde of alien beasts begins.
Peter Quill played the Redbone song at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1. It seems to indicate a new beginning with the new Guardians.
As the OG guardians have gone their own ways, there is now an opportunity for Marvel to create spinoffs for each character and their individual journeys. Who doesn’t want to see Drax and Nebula raising kids and having their hands full?
Final Credits Scene: Quill’s Reunion with His Grandfather
In the final credits scene, Peter Quill has finally reunited with his grandfather. After decades of separation, the two spend some time together, doing the thing that everyone loves the most, nitpicking and whining about others.
Quill adorably complains to his grandpa about a neighbor who has asked him to mow the lawn when he can do it himself. Peter’s grandpa also agrees, and the scene is wholesome enough for fans to have quivering lips.
A title card stating that the Star-Lord will return, but no date has been specified. It is unclear whether he will get another movie with the OG team or just a cameo to support the new kids.
Are the End-Credits Scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Important to Watch?
Yes, the two end-credits scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are essential to watch. At least the first mid-credits scene is a must-watch and should not be skipped. The second one is wholesome but adds little value to the overall plot.
The mid-credits scene teases the upcoming new characters who will take over the franchise and thus is a gateway to the next film. However, the second one can be watched only for the heart-melting factor.
If you are a Marvel fan, then chances are you will watch until the very last credits of the film just to get a few extra seconds with the characters you love.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set up a beautiful ending to the three-movie saga, and everyone parted ways amiably, including Gamora. As fans, we will always miss the chaotic team, but it’s clear that the time to move on is here.
