With the announcement of the live-action version of one of the oldest animated cartoon films, anticipation has been riding high among the fans of “Snow White” since 2021. But recent revelations on the cast and plot of the film don’t seem to be going well with fans, who seem highly unhappy with the transition from the original film.
So much so that fans have taken to their social media handles to express their disappointment with Disney, and the backlash on the upcoming movie, set to be released by 2024, is continuing. Read to know why fans are disproval of the film.
What Is the Snow White Controversy?
The controversy started with some disagreement regarding the casting choices, or rather, the absence of them, for the seven dwarfs. The producers have reportedly been searching for alternative options in order to avoid any harmful stereotypes. They are clearly taking this matter seriously and are committed to making the most responsible casting decisions possible.
Controversy regarding the casting of a Latina actress as Snow White has also given rise to a racist backlash among viewers.
During a recent interview at the 2022 D23 Expo, Gal Gadot acclaimed for her portrayal of “Wonder Woman,” and Zegler, a rising star in Hollywood, engaged in an insightful conversation regarding the highly anticipated remake of the beloved fairy tale character Snow White.
The two talented actresses delved into the exciting transformation of the narrative, emphasizing the “values, dreams, and agency” of the iconic Disney princess.
In response to a question about the approach towards modernizing the story, Zegler chuckled before offering a thoughtful reply. She revealed that the new iteration of Snow White would not be set in the original 1937 era, hinting at a fresh and contemporary take on the classic tale.
“She’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Ziegler noted. “She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she were fearless, fair, brave, and true.”
During the discussion about the movie, Gal Gadot, who plays the role of the Evil Queen, interrupted to share some information, revealing that Prince Ferdinand would not be the one to rescue Snow White from her perilous situation.
“People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is—because it needed that. It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond “Someday My Prince Will Come.”

What Is the New Storyline of Snow White?
With the news of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” being adapted into a live-action production, it seems like Disney is taking a fresh approach to the seven dwarf characters to make sure they are inclusive and diverse. Even the name of the iconic film has been changed to “Snow White,” dropping the legendary seven dwarfs from the title.
This also meant that the characters of the upcoming film have seen a drastic change. It also hints that the dwarfs will no longer be the main part of the storyline.
Lead actress Rachel Zegler has hinted that the story will have modern updates that will resonate with a more progressive audience. Instead, a new character has been added to be Snow White’s love interest, which could change the original plot quite a bit, as the love interest would also not be a typical “knight in the shining armour” kind of character.
These changes are part of Disney’s ongoing efforts to make more inclusive and diverse content that aligns with modern societal values, which, perhaps, has also given impetus to the ongoing backlash among the fans of the classic cartoon film.
The Disney remake is all set to be released on the 22nd of March, 2024.
