Ever wondered what’d happen if you tossed a bunch of Hollywood stars into a world made of cubes?

Because the new Minecraft movie trailer just dropped, and it’s… something.

Remember those old “Minecraft in real life” videos from 2013?

Yeah, it’s kinda like that, but with a bigger budget and Jason Momoa in a pink fringed jacket. You heard me right. Aquaman’s traded his trident for some questionable fashion choices.

The trailer gives us a glimpse of humans getting sucked into the blocky world of Minecraft. We’ve got square pigs flying (when pigs fly, am I right?), a pink sheep that looks like it escaped from a geometry textbook, and Jack Black as Steve. Because who else could capture the essence of a pixelated dude with no personality?

With the trailer already catching heat for bizarre costumes, questionable CGI, and odd casting choices, the pink sheep fiasco might just be the cherry on top of a very blocky cake.

But does this pink sheep moment actually prove the movie is a bad idea?

Yes, it really does. The pink sheep scene highlights a major issue with the movie: the decision to go live-action with clunky CGI instead of embracing the charm of Minecraft’s pixelated, animated style. The costumes look like a randomizer picked them, the CGI animals are giving major “first Sonic movie trailer” vibes, and the whole thing screams “green screen gone wild.”

Minecraft: Why the Pink Sheep (and Other Choices) Are Causing Concern

The pink sheep scene is a prime example of where A Minecraft Movie starts to go downhill.

In the game, pink sheep are a rare, fun Easter egg—players love them for their randomness. But in the movie, seeing this sheep rendered with unsettling realism while still trying to look blocky just feels off.

Instead of capturing the game’s charm, it gives viewers that awkward “too real” feeling, similar to the backlash Sonic the Hedgehog initially faced before a complete redesign saved it.

The backlash against A Minecraft Movie doesn’t stop there. Viewers are also slamming the costume choices, especially with Jason Momoa’s bizarre pink fringed jacket and wig, which left fans on social media wondering what kind of fever dream the wardrobe team was working through. And the CGI animals?

They’ve been compared to early versions of Sonic before its major glow-up.

Fans have also pointed out that, unlike the LEGO movie, which nailed its blend of humor, animation, and heart, A Minecraft Movie is stumbling by going live-action. It feels like the movie is trying too hard to appeal to a broad audience while missing the mark for those who actually love the game.

Ultimately, the pink sheep scene is just one sign of a movie that’s struggling to balance creativity and loyalty to the source material. Minecraft is all about imagination, but this just seems like a blocky mess.

What do you think? Would an animated version have been better?

Averagebeing’s Take: If the pink sheep scene is any clue, A Minecraft Movie feels like it’s heading for disaster. Maybe a little fan feedback, like what saved Sonic, could give it a much-needed second chance or at least give us some prime meme material.
