In a surprising twist, Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga “One Piece” unveiled that Straw Hat Luffy’s dream isn’t just to become the Pirate King.

Instead, he harbors an even larger aspiration. The mystery of Luffy’s newfound dream has left fans eagerly awaiting answers. So, what does he want to become?

In Chapter 1060 of the One Piece manga and Episode 1088 of the anime, titled “Luffy’s Dream,” Luffy’s true dream was hinted at. While it remains undisclosed, speculations revolve around freedom, with some theorizing that Luffy desires universal freedom through piracy, while others suggest he seeks friendship and unity. Regardless, the revelation has left his comrades astounded.

What Is Luffy’s Main Dream?

In “One Piece,” a famous manga and anime series that has captivated audiences for nearly 25 years, the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, declares his lofty ambition in the very first chapter: to become the Pirate King.

A title that has historically belonged to Gol D. Roger, the enigmatic figure who left an indelible mark on the world. Luffy’s declaration set the stage for a grand adventure that has unfolded over thousands of chapters and episodes.

Luffy’s journey closely mirrored that of Gol D. Roger, the former Pirate King.

Both embarked on a quest to assemble formidable crews of friends and allies, traverse the treacherous waters of the Grand Line, and ultimately reach the elusive Laugh Tale. On this island, Roger’s fabled treasure, the One Piece, is said to be hidden.

It’s a path paved with danger, discovery, and the pursuit of dreams.

While Luffy’s initial goal may have appeared straightforward, recent developments in the story have hinted at a deeper layer to his aspirations.

Chapter #1060 of “One Piece” took a surprising turn as the Straw Hat Pirates discussed Luffy’s sworn brother, Sabo.

Sabo, accused of murdering King Cobra, had become a fugitive, and this turn of events prompted Luffy to reminisce about their shared childhood dreams.

In their youth, Luffy, Sabo, and Ace pledged to set sail as pirates to pursue their dreams. Sabo dreamed of exploring the world and writing about his adventures, while Ace aspired to become a renowned pirate and prove his worth.

Fun fact, Luffy’s dream was first mentioned in chapter 506.#ONEPIECE1088 pic.twitter.com/lFTMXJIyjv

Luffy’s dream, never explicitly revealed in the original sequence, had always been assumed to be the same as Roger’s: to become the Pirate King. However, Chapter #1060 shattered this assumption, astounding the Straw Hat crew and readers.

Luffy’s true dream, as hinted at in this chapter, remains a mystery, but there are compelling theories circulating among fans.

One theory suggests that Luffy’s dream is closely tied to his unwavering pursuit of freedom, a motif that underpins all his actions.

The concept of freedom has been a driving force for Luffy, inspiring him to protect his own freedom and that of his friends.

The latest episode of the anime, Episode 1088, titled “Luffy’s Dream,” also delved into this enigmatic revelation.

An intriguing theory that has sprung out of the episode suggested that Luffy may desire for everyone to become a pirate, viewing pirates as the epitome of freedom and the belief that the Pirate King is the freest person of all.

This notion aligns with a sentiment shared by Gol D. Roger in his final meeting with Whitebeard and is portrayed humorously in interactions with Shanks and his crew.

I love Jinbe's reaction to Luffy's dream,I wonder what clues can be taken from it.First it's something that is shocking to hear. But then he burst out laughing mentions it's something troublesome, and a problem that is the crew's responsability too. pic.twitter.com/7FXzZ2w8Mo

But others think his dream is to be friends or party with everyone.

Now, other speculations also abound- from radical ideas such as abolishing the World Government, the oppressive ruling body that governs the world, to more innocent notions befitting a young child’s perspective.

Yet, what could be the dream that rendered Luffy’s crew speechless and challenged the expectations built over 1,000 episodes of him striving to become the Pirate King?

Therein lies the brilliance of Eiichiro Oda, the creator of “One Piece.” He has weaved complex narratives and subverted expectations while keeping the story coherent and accurate to the characters.

Luffy’s evolving dream is a testament to Oda’s storytelling prowess, turning a straightforward quest into a multi-dimensional journey of self-discovery and purpose.

What do you think Luffy’s dream is? Is it to become the Pirate King? Or is it something else entirely?
