Over the years, as multiple installments of the blockbuster American action franchise Fast and Furious were released, it was touted that the Vin Diesel-led franchise would finally hang its boots after the 10th installment. Now that the tenth entry is already out there, fans are wondering what could be the possible future of Fast and Furious.
The film series began its journey into the cinemas with the 2001 film titled The Fast and the Furious. The action entertainer was deemed one of the year’s biggest hits and starred in the iconic duo of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
After this success, we saw the story continue every few years, with Dominic Toretto and the gang performing physics-defying car stunts to safeguard his family and friends from harm. The story moved into a non-linear structure in the following installments and became a major part of American pop culture. (At least to some extent)
Will Fast X Bring an End to the Franchise?
As the years progressed, the Fast and Furious franchise became a worldwide success through its adrenaline-pumping action and quirky one-liners. Fans worldwide would keep guessing what new adventure the makers of the films lead the audiences on.
However, over time, this fact seeped into the public consciousness that the entire family thing would officially end after its 10th installment.
But we have news for the disheartened fans that keep asking for more. During the film’s media interaction in Rome, Vin Diesel confirmed that the final installment would be a three-part film.
The other two parts of this three-part film are already under work, with the first part released recently. At first, it was announced that this would be a two-part film. But with Diesel confirming that two more installments are coming, it was a pretty big report.
However, earlier, Diesel had said that Fast and Furious would premier its 11th and ‘final’ film in 2025. Diesel might just be teasing the announcement as he was quick to leave the scene after making this raging remark about the franchise’s fate. The production house, Universal Pictures, is also yet to announce its plans regarding the Fast and Furious future officially.
Why Is the Final Installment Being Made in Three Parts?
Given the scope of the story, it seems from a distance that it was probably a thoughtful decision. The franchise has been out there for years, and so many plot points and characters have been introduced over the years.
These high-octane films were also criticized many times for leaving several story threads open and never concluding them. So, the studio must have decided to address all those issues and conclude the story with a satisfying stretched-out finale.
Also, it gives the makers a space to finally play around with a cliffhanger ending, which is a sure-shot crowd-puller. In the previous installments, the fans saw satisfactory conclusions in each film, which just meant that the family would always survive. But with the final movie being made into three parts, cliffhangers can be introduced to build anticipation for the following parts, which will help soar the business.
Who Will Star in the Final Movies of Fast and Furious?
Fast X introduced Jason Momoa into the mix, playing the villain quirkily named Dante, battling Dom directly. This was a welcome addition to the overall casting roaster of the franchise that previously had big names like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Jason Momoa is best known for playing Aquaman in the DCEU, and his bulky build combined with the action-star persona is set to give the entire F&F world a whole new dimension. Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez will be seen reprising their characters of Dominic Toretto and Letty Ortiz, respectively.
The first part of the three-part finale, titled Fast X, is currently doing great business and playing in theatres worldwide.
What do you think about this whole 3-part situation? Do Universal Pictures really need to stretch the final installment into three parts, or is that solely a decision motivated by the business aspect?
