Whenever you want to learn a new language, the most common recommendation you receive would be Duolingo, an app that makes language learning so much easier.
Thanks to the concept of streaks and its step-by-step free lessons, countless individuals worldwide are learning languages and making their lives easier.
If you’re one of them and recently found something odd with the app, you’re not alone.
So, why is Duolingo melting? The app icon featuring the green and friendly bird is indeed melting, but that’s not a bug but rather an attempt to gather the attention of both new and old users and make them open the app more often.
What Is Duolingo?
Duolingo is a language learning app recommended for beginners who want to learn a language or those who wish to become proficient in a particular tongue.
The app begins from the ground up by introducing the user to the alphabet of their desired language and gradually takes them to higher levels.
You can learn a language using any of your preferred languages. For example, if you’re well-versed in English, you can choose it as your main language and learn other languages, like French or Japanese, using English words.
Apart from easy lessons that encourage users to learn more words from a language, it also has a streak option, which many Duolingo users take seriously, with the longest streak being over 3900 days.
Furthermore, even if you are not able to spare a few minutes to continue the streak, it provides a streak freeze option, using which you can skip a day or two without losing your progress.
Why Is the Duolingo App Melting?
If you have been freaking out about why the friendly green owl, which was supposed to teach you new words with a happy face, is melting, don’t worry, it is not a bug you’re encountering.
While you could say the Duolingo app is trying something spooky for the upcoming Halloween, that does sound amazing, and it could be true. However, nothing has been posted on the official accounts of Duolingo yet.
If they were going for a Halloween theme, the logo would look spooky but not in the way that it melts right now. So, the only possible assumption that we could make from this is that they are trying to garner more attention from the users.
The app posted something convincing on its Google Play and App Store description page, which could solve your concerns regarding the melting icon.
“Our mascot owl, Duo, is swapping in his usual diet of mice for bugs this week. Yup, we’re trampling those pesky bugs to make the experience better for all of you.”
This message could also mean that the mascot owl may have been following a strict diet and is drained of energy; thus, it looks as if it is melting, signifying that it takes effort to learn a language thoroughly.
So, the users need not be concerned regarding the melting design as it is simply a unique design to gain attention, and the app will continue to receive more updates every month.
If this is a prototype design that the app is trying to test before Halloween, then it is doing a great job. Maybe we will get a new icon specifically made for Halloween by the end of the month.
So, what do you think about the melting mascot owl appearing on your home screen? Do you believe it would make a great Halloween design?
