TikTok challenges are usually an amalgamation of pranks, dares, and ludicrous actions to kindle absurdly funny reactions. Some of the past challenges have also resulted in bonding and socializing among strangers.
One such entertaining trend was the Grimace Shake TikTok challenge, where people would film themselves exaggeratedly passing out after tasting an exclusive McDonald’s purple drink.
However, sometimes, the greed for reactions and engagement can also lead content creators to resort to crossing the line between a challenge and violence.
On July 30, 2023, Fox 29 reporter Bob Kelly from Good Day Philadelphia was covering an event at Oar House Pub in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. Suddenly, a young man, Patrick Lannone, poured water on the reporter as a part of a TikTok challenge. When the Fox 29 reporter pushed the drink away, the man punched him, causing a swollen eye and partial loss of consciousness. Kelly was immediately taken to the hospital.

Hence, the transpired incident shocked the community and raised concerns among netizens about how far people are willing to go viral or get a few likes.
On July 30, 2023, Bob Kelly attended a special weekend event at the Oar House Pub in Sea Isle City. With his usual friendly demeanor and charming self, he approached several attendees at the party, interviewing them casually.
But as the night progressed, the party got wilder, and people were getting chaotic. Amidst the vibrant crowd, a young, unhinged guy suddenly poured water on Bob’s head. Even though the Fox 29 reporter tried his best to maintain his composure, due to reflex, he shoved the drink away from his face.
Whatever triggered this young fella, he proceeded to punch the reporter in the face, knocking him unconscious for a few seconds. Revealing his true cowardice, the man fled from the scene as the security guards approached him. He was eventually caught after a few blocks of chase and immediately apprehended in police custody.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kelly was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he sustained severe injuries around his eyes.
Even then, with his true anchor spirit, Bob Kelly showed up for the taping with a swollen black eye after only taking a day off.
Indeed, the show must go on! However, viewers were concerned due to the severity of the injury, as Kelly recalled the night as a “frightening, disturbing event.”
Why Was Fox 29’s Reporter Assaulted At A Bar?
The man who assaulted Bob Kelly was identified as 21-year-old Sea Isle City native Patrick Lannone. The investigation revealed that Lannone poured a drink on the coveted reporter as a part of a TikTok Challenge, wherein people pour water on random strangers. Sounds absurd, right? Well, that’s the matrix we are living in today!
But the Gen-Zer clearly crossed the legal line by assaulting the Good Day Philadelphia anchor by knocking him out.
This incident also reminded me of the viral Cardi B video where the rapper retaliated against a person who threw water at her by throwing a mic back at the person. It’s concerning but also hilarious.
Coming back to this case–
Patrick Lannone appeared in Cape May County Superior Court for his arraignment, where his defense lawyer pleaded not guilty and requested a pretrial intervention PTI.
Per this clause, this diversion program can help the defendant avoid sentencing if they successfully finish a probationary period and, in some cases, expunge their criminal record.
Regardless of what fate holds for the young man, there’s no denying that we are headed for chaotic social media-inclined digital misdemeanors if people continue to thrive on likes and engagement.
