The Michigan Wolverines have been under investigation for a few months for allegedly scouting their future opponents, but things got even more complicated with the involvement of their coach, Matt Weiss.
While the NCAA is investigating the team for an entirely different crime that may destroy their hopes of reaching the college football playoffs, Matt Weiss has done something no coach should do.
Matt Weiss, the quarterbacks coach of the Michigan Wolverines, allegedly accessed the university email accounts without authorization in December 2022 and was fired from his position as a coach for the Wolverines on January 20, 2023.
What Did Matt Weiss Do?
Matt Weiss, the quarterbacks coach and the co-offensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines, was involved in computer access crimes where he accessed university email without authorization.
While the main reason behind Weiss’ access to emails is unknown, the FBI and the University of Michigan police department have joined hands to investigate the case further.
On Thursday, The University of Michigan police department told Detroit Free Pass via email about how it was working with the FBI for months on the matter concerning the former Michigan football coach, Matt Weiss.
“The University of Michigan Police Department has partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the Matt Weiss unauthorized computer access incident.”
“Currently, the investigation is extensive, ongoing, and is of the utmost priority. Additional information will be provided when available.”
While both departments have teamed up to dig the case further, Matt Weiss has not been arrested yet.
Why Was Matt Weiss Fired From His Position?
Although Weiss was initially placed on leave on January 5, following the surface of his crimes of accessing university emails without authorization due to a Michigan employee reporting his fraudulent activity, he was soon fired from his position as the coach.
Even though he was not charged with the crime at the time, Weiss reportedly didn’t attend a meeting where he was supposed to discuss the matters of his alleged crime and was involuntarily fired.
Warde Manuel, the Director of Athletics at Michigan University, released a statement regarding Matt Weiss’ termination. In his words,
“After a thorough review of policies, the University’s athletic department has terminated the appointment of co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. Consistent with university policy, we will have no further comment on this personnel matter.”
Why Are the Michigan Wolverines Being Investigated?
Since Matt Weiss’ alleged crimes have nothing to do with the Michigan Wolverines, the joint investigation of the FBI and the Michigan University police department is unlikely to punish them.
However, the Michigan Wolverines are being investigated for an entirely different and unrelated matter. They are facing an NCAA investigation for allegedly scouting their Big Ten opponents while secretly attending their matches.
In fact, the firm findings of the NCAA report that Connor Stallions, who is now suspended for involvement in the scouting, had purchased nearly 30 tickets for different Big Ten teams in the last couple of years.
Scouting opponents in person was banned in 1994, and ever since any team caught doing so was penalized.
So, what do you think about Matt Weiss’ case? Do you believe the Michigan Wolverines will be disqualified if proven guilty?
