As One Piece Film: Red knocks down barriers, the screenwriter explains exclusive details about Red-haired Shanks!
One Piece Film: Red is the highest-grossing film in Japan this year. It is set to breach the $130 billion mark in a day. Goro Taniguchi directed the movie, including Eiichiro Oda working diligently behind the scenes. Even in nations like France, Taiwan, China, and Thailand, the film shattered records at the Box Office.
The chief of the Red Haired Pirates is one of the Four Emperors whose dominion exists in the New World. He once served as the apprentice on a ship laden with the Roger Pirates. Learning from the master Gol D. Roger, both Shanks and Buggy benefited greatly and grew up to become formidable pirates with their personal crews.
Though not much attention has been paid to the extent of his abilities, Shanks once gave up his left arm to save Luffy when the latter was at a tender age. Even Kaidou and Akainu remain wary of him, and the former has even subjected Shanks to praise. He is an influential fellow who most characters try their best not to cross, and he was even granted a meeting with the Five Elders of the World Government.

The current bounty on Shanks is set at 4,048,900,000 berries. The notorious Blackbeard steered clear of him when he felt threatened by the Red-Haired pirate’s presence. Sengoku has tremendous respect for Shanks and Whitebeard, shown when he stopped the war to not stamp down on Ace and Whitebeard’s demise.
During an interview conducted recently, the scriptwriter of One Piece Film: Red Tsutomu Kuroiwa said, “I interpret him (Shanks) as a person who knows both the light and dark parts of the world. Shanks is a character who is much more mature than Luffy and others, and has lived with both good and bad.”
When asked more questions about the character, He replied, “Shanks has a good side and a bad side which only Oda knows.”
This is probably meant to convey that Shanks is a grey character who doesn’t necessarily adhere to goodness. In a world where the lines between black and white get muddled, it is refreshing to see the growth of such a character in Japan’s most popular manga series.
While Shanks has had sporadic appearances in the manga and anime, they always end up motivating the fans. He also has a small but significant role in One Piece Film: Red as the primary antagonist Uta (the melodious singer), is his daughter and Luffy’s childhood playmate.
A man who craves freedom and friendship more than anything, Shanks is a worthy mentor and guiding figure for Monkey D. Luffy. Though his bond with Uta is similar to the one involving Gon and Ging in Hunter x Hunter, I would say that Uta hated her father and the Red-Haired Pirate crew a lot which isn’t the same feeling Gon has for his absentee father.
