Breaking the Internet? Not many things can do that. Over the years, what has actually crashed sites are celebrities, new trends, etc. But that doesn’t mean that shows, films, and anime are far behind. Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why have famously crashed Twitter/ X in the past. MCU announcements and trailer releases have also done that. But what about anime?
They aren’t far behind as well. Who can forget the havoc that Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation caused online? Or when he unlocked his Ultra Instinct? Saitama’s anticipated fight with Boros and Reiner and Bertholdt revealing themselves as the Armored Titan and Colossal Titan also made the sites crash. Now, a new guy wants a place at the prestigious table- One Piece.
Fans think that Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation has broken the internet. But is that true? Yes. One Piece’s episode 1071, which finally showed Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation, did crash Crunchyroll and other anime streaming sites. The scene has gone viral on social media sites and has been trending at #3 and #5 worldwide.
Did Gear 5 Break the Internet?
It’s finally here! One Piece’s episode 1071 has given people what they wanted- Luffy’s anticipated Gear 5 transformation as the Warrior of Liberation. As expected, the scene has gone viral on social media platforms, with fans expressing their disbelief at this iconic moment. Many also say that it has broken the internet, and indeed, it looks like it has.
Many are reporting that the major anime streaming site, Crunchyroll, had crashed due to massive traffic worldwide. Several users reported being unable to access the site for hours after the episode aired. That’s not all. Viewers who often use pirated sites to watch their favorite animes reported being unable to do so.
It’s all presumably because of the sudden heavy traffic thanks to the now iconic One Piece’s episode 1071. The transformation scene has also been going viral on Twitter/ X and Instagram. The hashtags #Gear5, #OnePiece and #Luffy are trending worldwide at numbers #3, #5, and more.
On X/Twitter, the scene has racked up thousands of likes and is being watched even by people who are not interested in animes. However, rival fandoms aren’t sure that One Piece has broken the internet.
Why Other Anime Fandoms Think One Piece Hasn’t Broken the Internet?
Even though Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation scene is going viral, shutting down sites, and shattering viewing records, rival fandoms like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z believe it has yet to reach the peak moments from their shows. Fans think that Goku’s Ultra Instinct mode or Naruto’s Baryon mode scenes got a lot more public response than this.
As such, rival fandoms have come together to say that the Gear 5 scene isn’t as impactful as it could have been. Even fans of Bleach have noted that the Final Getsuga Tensho of Ichigo was more impactful than Gear 5. But One Piece fans aren’t backing down that fast.
They are standing with Oda and the show, saying that episode 1071’s has garnered higher tweets than the previous iconic ones like episodes 1062 and 1015. The next episode is expected to reach more numbers as the actual fight between Kaido and Luffy will begin then. However, fans have some complaints about episode 1071.
They aren’t happy that Orochi and Hiyori’s confrontation scene took much screen time. Also, a more extended intro cut into the runtime and reduced the actual action. But for now, fans aren’t overthinking about the negatives and are busy basking in the show’s success and finally getting to witness the iconic Gear 5 scene.
One Piece is streaming on Crunchyroll.
Do you think that Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation scene broke the internet? Or is it underwhelming compared to the public response to other iconic scenes like Goku going Ultra Instinct?
