Superman is here, the new one, actually. When James Gunn announced his plans for a new DCU beginning with Creature Commandos, Waller, and the most anticipated Superman: Legacy, no one thought he would move this fast to cast his Clark Kent. But that’s exactly what has happened.
Within five months of his DCU slate announcement, Gunn announced the names of the actors who play Superman and Lois Lane. Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet are replacing Amy Adams and Henry Cavill as the two Daily Planet reporters on the big screen. But are they actually worthy of playing the characters?
James Gunn has cast David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy. The actor towers at 6’4″ and is 29 years old while the actress is 5’3″ and 32.
While Corenswet hasn’t had a breakout role, fans believe he looks like the comic book character has come alive on-screen. As for Brosnahan, she is known for her Emmy-winning performance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
What Makes David Corenswet Perfect for Playing Clark Kent/ Superman?
What makes the casting of David Corenswet perfect is that he has the traditional looks one wants to see in an actor portraying Superman. Many have commented online that David Corenswet resembles a mix between Henry Cavill and Tom Welling. Some also think his facial features look like the legendary Christopher Reeve’s.
He also has the height to play Superman as the actor is 6’4″. In comparison, Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) is reportedly 6’1″, while the late Christopher Reeve (Superman: The Movie) was 6’3½”. The 29-year-old actor has quite an impressive filmography already. He got his start in House of Cards and then went on to star in The Politician and Hollywood. He also recently starred in Pearl with Mia Goth.
Viewers of these projects have described him as a good actor. After all, he completed his education at Julliard in 2016. However, the actor hasn’t had any breakout roles till now. So getting the job of Superman is a jackpot for him. Lastly, another essential thing that makes him more ideal for the part is his Jewish heritage.
The creators of the Man of Steel, Joe Shuster, and Jerry Siegel, were Jewish men. Also, over the years, many have theorized that Superman is a Jewish-coded character. So finally, a Jewish actor has also been cast in the role.
What Makes Rachel Brosnahan Perfect for Playing Lois Lane?
Barely a day ago, The Hollywood Reporter ran a report stating that Emma Mackey had auditioned with the three potential Supermen- David Corenswet, Tom Brittney, and Nicholas Hoult. The article stated that Mackey being the only constant could mean that she had the role of Lois Lane in the bag.
A lot of fans thought her casting as the intrepid reporter was perfect. However, many also believed that she was a bit too young to play Lois Lane, an experienced journalist. Those fans must feel vindicated because Rachel Brosnahan bagged the coveted lead role alongside David Corenswet.
The 32-year-old actress rose to fame thanks to her starring role in the critically acclaimed show- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She even bagged the 2018 Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the role of Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel in the show. Apart from this, she won two SAG Awards in 2019.
It was in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series as well as in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category. So she certainly has the chops to play the spunky Lois Lane. Her other notable works include- The Courier, I’m Your Woman, and Dead for a Dollar.
Brosnahan is 5’3″ tall. In comparison, Amy Adams (Man of Steel) is 5’3 ½”, and the late Margot Kidder (Superman: The Movie) was 5’7″. Fans online are already fawning at the height difference between the two actors. Many fans have taken offense at the fact that the actress is three years older than Corenswet.
However, this seems to be a new trend where the Lois Lane actress is a little older than the guy playing Superman. Amy Adams and Henry Cavill have an 8-year age difference, with Adams on the older side. Similarly, Bitsie Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin, who play the roles of Lois and Clark on the CW’s Superman and Lois show, have a 6-year age gap.
Also, comic book fans think it makes sense for Lois to be a little older than Clark because, generally, she’s the experienced reporter while he begins working at the Daily Planet as a cub reporter when he meets her.
As such, Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet look great on paper as Lois Lane and Clark Kent/ Superman characters. But there’s no way to know how their on-screen chemistry will be. Fans hope their romantic on-screen chemistry turns out better than Henry Cavill and Amy Adams’ or Kate Bosworth and Brandon Routh’s.
Superman: Legacy will be released in theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.
So what do you think of the casting of Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet as Lois Lane and Clark Kent/ Superman?
Are you happy with the castings? Or would you have preferred someone else? Does the three-year age gap between them bother you?
