Breaking the glass ceiling in the 1940s American entertainment industry was as good as finding a needle in a haystack. The chances that an outsider could break into the white race-dominated realm were next to nothing.

But then, one man rose from the shadows and redefined regional entertainment on a national scale.

Raoul Alfonso Cortez, born on October 17, 1905, in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, was a vibrant little child among his nine siblings who loved to spread joy wherever he went to whomever he met. He was exposed to the various media as his father owned a radio station in Nuevo Laredo, a Mexican city.

However, within the next five years, growing unrest during the Mexican Revolution compelled the family to migrate to the United States. There, a young Raoul explored a new world of untapped opportunities and decided to introduce his roots to the world.

Thus, Raoul paved a way that helped several influential people of color to showcase their talent.

In 1946, Cortez founded the first full-time Spanish radio and television station, KCOR, which started a renaissance in Hispanic entertainment. But he did not stop there. He soon began his journalism career as a correspondent for La Prensa, a San Antonio-based Spanish daily newspaper. Cortez wanted a stream of income to fund his dream of buying a local radio station, KMAC.

Cortez’s main goal was to bring the Spanish radio and TV media to the forefront, which would open doors of opportunities for overlooked Hispanic talent.

Over the decades, Cortez’s voice became an influential asset that helped the LatinX community. As a former president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), he advocated for Hispanic rights and civil reforms for the community.

Along with his social and philanthropic contributions, Cortez was also known as a wholesome family man. He doted on his little world of wife, Genoveva Valdés Cortez, and three children, including two daughters, Rosamaria Cortez (Toscano) and Irma Cortez (Nicolas), and a son, Raoul Cortez Jr.

Hence, his sudden death came as a shock to the entire community.

Raoul A. Cortez’s death on December 17, 1971, at his home in San Antonio, Texas, still echoes unanswered questions of sudden passing. Some speculate that he died by suicide, while some resources suggest that he was killed in an accident. However, there is no confirmation on either of the claims.

However, his mysterious death, when he was just 66 years old, still leaves us to ponder with speculations whether it was a suicide or he died in an accident. Due to the utmost privacy surrounding his death, there is hardly any way to confirm the cause of his death.

Regardless, he still remains in the hearts of many who were affected by his existence.

From a little girl who wrote school plays and made her friends act in them to an adolescent who got into dark humor, Yashica has built her own universe of peculiar characters inspired by great cinema. She has imbibed the philosophies of David Fincher's characters but lives like the eccentricity of Phoebe Waller Bridge's women. Her metahumans are those who can use the power of words to create an elixir of emotions and bring them to life on screen. Jordan Peele, Issa Rae, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ilana-Abbi, Raj-DK, Anurag Kashyap, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and others are her Marvel's Avengers. With over two years of experience as a content writer, her writing pieces are well-researched, with a sprinkle of her opinions/inferences that keep the audiences engaged. She is still exploring more on the anime scene but is highly intrigued by it. The cinephile in her makes her appreciate the intricacies of filmmaking. You will get a lot more insight into it in her articles and thoroughly enjoy her explanations. Well, someday, you might see Yashica as one of the writers for a movie-- it's her ultimate dream!
