The Denis Villeneuve-directed 2016 sci-fi film Arrival is considered one of the best alien drama. Featuring Amy Adams as Louise Banks, a woman whose job it is to communicate with aliens who have come to Earth, the movie explores how humans react to extraterrestrial visitors. It was a compelling sci-fi film focusing on a linguistics teacher’s attempt to prevent a third World War.

What Happened At The End Of Arrival?
The ending of the movie is unlike many other sci-fi films that are cheesy but endearing. The Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner starrer movie ends on a sweet, melancholy, and devastating note. The movie ends with a love story formed between the characters of Jeremy and Amy. However, before that, Louise realizes that humans and aliens can have a pleasant co-existence, and she is instrumental in figuring that out.
Both of them share their love for each other, and Louise realizes that they will be together in the future. They will also have a daughter named Hannah, who will pass away when she is 12 because she has a sickness that can’t be healed. Knowing that Ian breaks up with Louise, she agrees to be in a relationship with Ian and start a family.
What Is The Surprise Twist In Arrival?
Later in the movie, Louise realizes after her last encounter with the aliens, the memories she has had weren’t memories or flashbacks at all. They are visions of what will happen in the future in the life of Amy Adam’s character. At the beginning of the movie, Louise says in voiceover that “we were so bound by time, by its order,” hinting that the story about to unfold isn’t as linear as audiences would expect from a sci-fi film.
Even Hannah’s name in the movie is a clue as it is a palindrome, reading the same backward as it does forwards, similar to the way the aliens’ circular language works. With all that, the final moments of the movie show them happy, embracing together, and looking to the future after the aliens peacefully depart from the Earth.
Will There Be A Sequel To Arrival?
In Costello’s final meeting with Louise Banks, the alien explains that they hoped to have the humans as allies for a conflict in 3,000 years.
However, it is still unclear what exactly the aliens need help with, but it seemingly indicates that this isn’t the last interaction the humans will have with the beings from the outer planet. So far, no official announcement has been made by the makers regarding the sequel to the movie.
Arrival made $200 million on a budget of less than $50 million, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if a follow-up would be announced in the future.
