The new title of Coach Prime comes from his previous nickname, which was given by fans who knew him during his early American football career. Explaining his previous Prime Time title, Deion once shared about the same on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in February 2022 after Fallon asked why he didn’t go by Neon Deion.
“I’d already earned ‘Prime Time’ in high school. I dropped like 37 that night, had two dunks back to back, curl was wet, looked dry,” said Deion.
Deion Sanders revealed it was the fans who gave him the title at the beginning of his career as a player, which was later upgraded when he became the coach. The nickname alludes to him being an all-time performer, putting on an impressive show for everyone as a player and now as a coach.

In his 14-year NFL career, Deion Sanders was a total machine playing for several teams over the years, including the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and Baltimore Ravens.
Sanders’s impressive playing career makes him an obvious choice for coaching future generations. He started out working as a coach at Jackson State University and made it pretty clear he wanted to go by Coach Prime and nothing else.
How Deion Sanders Got His Own Documentary
With an impressive career, Sanders had many anecdotes from the field that would be a cash grab for many. Amazon Prime Video worked on the documentary on the title that Deion Sanders earned in his career. Coach Prime showcased his life and how he is credited with turning the football team around, helping the historically black university win two SWAC titles, and recruiting some of the country’s top players.
The Prime Video Sports docuseries was nominated for a Sports Emmy and was now renewed for more seasons. Season 2 followed Coach Prime throughout his inaugural season at the University of Colorado with the Colorado Buffaloes.
Just like Season 1, the second series took the viewers inside the locker room and on the field during games and practices throughout the 2023 season.
