Patrick Mahomes is, without a doubt, the Chiefs’ most valuable player of the decade and, not to mention, one of the best quarterbacks of all time.
His vision of playmaking and throwing balls to the tight ends is unparalleled, making him a dangerous opponent for other teams while a valuable asset to the Chiefs and its players.
Despite being such a perfect individual on and off the field, he has strange mannerisms, like wiggling his fingers and wearing his helmet unusually high.
So, why does Mahomes wear his helmet high? Patrick Mahomes wears his helmet high because it used to slide down during the play and ended up obstructing his vision multiple times. In order to avoid that, he started making it sit a little higher than usual, and it is clearly working.
Explained: Why Patrick Mahomes Wears His Helmet High
The NFL is a rough tournament where players tackle each other, and a simple, careless move could end a player’s career for good. So, every little thing matters on the field.
Concussion, in particular, is a likely possibility, given defenders often jump upon the player’s legs to stop them from scoring a touchdown or catching the ball and earning points.
In that sense, Patrick Mahomes is a quarterback who mostly runs the play from behind the line while delivering some spectacular catches to his teammates and assisting almost 90% of the time.
Obviously, he will be the main target of the adversarial teams. In the past, Mahomes used to have problems with his helmet as it used to slide down while he ran, making it harder to see the field.
A playmaker’s vision is crucial, so if he doesn’t fix that problem, most of his passes don’t go through, eventually leading to their loss. Thus, he came up with a solution.
He lets the helmet sit a bit higher on his head so when he runs, it doesn’t fall off like usual, but even if it does, it won’t obstruct his vision. It happened so many times in the past, and most of the time, passes weren’t accurate.
Although having the helmet at an unusual place on his head is uncomfortable, that is the price he must pay to get the passes out since the NFL doesn’t allow helmets other than the team’s.
Patrick Mahomes is currently ranked as the number one Football player in the NFL, tied with the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts for the MVP award. Both of them are sitting at +300 points following the Eagles’ recent game.
As Mahomes continues to be the main man of his team, it is only a matter of time before he can leave other competitors in the dust, but given Hurts’ impeccable performances in the last few games, it could be hard to widen the gap this time.
