Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 brought a fitting finale to the OG Guardians and showed us a glimpse of the next generation who will take over the responsibility. As the climax scene played on the big screen, you couldn’t help but marvel at the rescue effort, but a nagging question was at the back of everyone’s minds.
Where is Star Lord’s helmet? In fact, he wasn’t wearing his rocket boots either. The same get-up that is every child’s dream is nowhere to be seen in the third film, but why?
Towards the finale, Star-Lord made an almost impossible jump to Knowhere. He almost dies by freezing, but Adam saves him after a change of heart.
So why did the Star Lord not carry his trusted equipment that could have easily saved his life? Let’s dig in to find out why director James Gunn made a decision that could potentially lead to a plot hole.
Why Did Star-Lord Ditch His Helmet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
There are multiple theories about Peter Quill not using his helmet, but here’s the explanation from the director, James Gunn himself. In a tweet, he explained why the helmet and rocket boots weren’t present in the latest installation of Guardians of the Galaxy.
While the absence of boots could be explained since they are outdated technology, the helmet was ditched in favor of cool moves.
However, there is more to it than what meets the eye. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is Peter Quill’s retiring movie, and he needed to look out of his element. Not using the helmet could symbolize his altered character, who is ready to retire and let others take the mantle.
As the movie begins, Quill isn’t in the best shape and is mourning Gamora. He had not used his helmet in a while and forgot to take it as emergency news reached him.
If Quill had remembered to carry his helmet, Gunn could not have portrayed his sacrificial moment towards the finale. The moment would not have looked so realistic with the helmet and boots.
James Gunn ditched the helmet to give Peter Quill one last big moment before he could leave the franchise to join his grandpa.
Gunn had meant to keep the destruction of the helmet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 permanent. However, as the equipment appears in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Gunn had to opt for a more canonical explanation.
What Does Star Lord’s Helmet Do?
With all the chaos behind the lack of Quill’s helmet, someone new to MCU will definitely ask why the helmet is so special. Apart from it being a signature equipment of the Star-Lord, it also saves him from the vacuum created in space as well as other poisonous environments.
Some of its other features include shrinking to an earpiece that Quill wears on his right ear. It not only filters toxins but also has a backup oxygen supply. It protects the wearer from sudden changes in air pressure.
Another cool characteristic is its threat detection system that allows the Star-Lord to react quicker to an oncoming attack. It is also equipped with thermal and ultraviolet vision.
With so many cool features and the size shrinking, it is obvious why fans love the helmet. I mean, everyone desires a piece of cool tech like that.
Well, the helmet will no longer be featured in the franchise since Peter Quill has retired to Earth. Do you miss the helmet and boots just as much as we do? Or do you think Quill was able to shine even without them? Let us know what you think about Quill’s departure in the comments below.
