Belly and Conrad ruled the screen in the first season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. The lovebirds finally came together in the season finale, allowing viewers to take a sigh of relief. In season one, Isabel Conklin, also called Belly throughout the series, had a pretty intense drama sequence with Conrad, which kept the series’ followers on the edge of their seats.
However, the final episode showcased the dramatic love confession, bringing the duo together and inspiring audiences.
Despite their tremendous popularity, Belly and Conrad ended up being separate (warning: spoilers of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 ahead). But why? Why?
The second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is already out with three episodes, and the rest will unfold with every passing week. In the first episode of season 2, Belly is seen narrating her last night’s kiss with Conrad to Jeremiah. Following this, Jeremiah bashed Belly for betraying him. Further, Belly called it off with Conrad, saying she was embarrassed for betraying Jeremiah. As per the released episodes, it is hard to say with whom Belly would end up, but if believing the viewers, her true love is Conrad, they both would end up together, standing against all odds.
Have Belly and Conrad Parted in the Book Too?
The series The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on a romantic novel of the same name written by Jenny Han. She also wrote the overly popular To All The Boys, which became Netflix’s top romantic series.
Explaining the breakup, Jenny Han shared her thoughts with Entertainment Weekly and said-
“Season 2 starts with three breakups: Conrad and Belly, Steven and Shayla, and Lauren and Cleveland. None of the three relationships from season 1 have lasted. Season 1 is about the dream and the fantasy of summer love, and then season 2 is learning that nothing lasts forever, not summer romance and sadly not life either.”
“It’s a tough lesson, and it’s where Belly and all of our characters have to grow up.”
According to the book, Belly confronts Conrad at prom for barely dancing with her, striking up a conversation, or engaging in any of the prom-related activities she had imagined doing. At the prom, Belly breaks up with Conrad when she realizes he only went with her because Susannah insisted.
However, the episode’s script was tweaked. It was shown that because of Jeremiah, Belly and Conrad decided to go their separate ways. As Susannah (Conrad and Jeremiah’s mother) was diagnosed with cancer, it was time for the family to come together.
How Would the Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Unfold?
The first season of The Summer I Turned Pretty wasn’t on the mature side and delved into the love-sick side. However, the beginning of the second season showcased the strong will of the main characters and a more mature stance.
For example, Belly and Conrad could have continued, and Jeremiah would have made peace. However, characters in the second season are shown to be emotionally evolved. Jeremiah and Belly have reconciled, while Conrad has turned his cold shoulder towards Belly.
