With her signature sound, catchy lyrics, and powerful vocals, Taylor Swift continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of music.
While Swifties are well aware of the saddest song of her discography, “Ronan,” some are still clueless about its deep meaning.
Who Is Ronan Taylor Swift?
The song titled “Ronan” was made available for charity on the 8th of September in 2012, with the aim of providing support to cancer charities in the United States. The inspiration behind the song was the real-life story of Maya Thompson and her son, who passed away four days before his birthday.
The song was received well by the public and managed to achieve a high ranking on the musical charts. Specifically, it reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and an impressive number 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart.
The touching lyrics include, “I remember the drive home / When the blind hope turned to crying and screaming ‘Why?’ / Flowers pile up in the worst way, no one knows what to say / About a beautiful boy who died.”
On her blog in August of 2012, Thompson recounted a deeply emotional moment when Swift confided in her about writing a song for Ronan. Thompson further shared a poignant letter addressed to her beloved son, expressing her overwhelming emotions upon receiving the news. The heartbreaking experience left a lasting impression on Thompson, and she felt compelled to share it with her readers. She wrote,
“The tears started pouring down my cheeks as soon as I heard her say those words. But her words didn’t stop there. Not only did she write a song for you, but she wanted to know if it would be alright to perform it on the nationally televised Stand Up 2 Cancer show which is on every major network and is seen in over 100 countries.”
What Is the Story Behind Ronan by Taylor Swift?
Although until now, Taylor Swift had never had the chance to meet Ronan in person, she was well acquainted with him through Thompson’s countless blog posts about Rockstar Ronan. Thompson’s blog chronicled Ronan’s visits to the doctor, various chemotherapy treatments, surgeries, radiation therapy, and scans.
These updates were interspersed with Thompson’s raw innermost thoughts and fears about Ronan’s condition, as well as updates about her family and friends. In fact, Swift admitted during her 1989 Tour stop in Glendale in 2015 that she would read the blog “every night.”
Swift finally met Ronan in October 2011 when she invited the Thompsons and their sons, as well as another Phoenix family with a child undergoing Stage 4 cancer treatment, to her Speak Now Tour.
Ronan died in May 2011, just three days before his fourth birthday, but his legacy continues to live in Swift’s songs!
