Up-and-coming basketball star Reggie Chaney had a bright future ahead in Greece as he was contracted to play for their professional team AE Psychiko. But unfortunately, that didn’t come to be because he passed away.
Rising basketball star Reggie Chaney, who played for the University of Houston, died on August 21, 2023. He was only 23. The cause of death hasn’t been revealed yet. His last Instagram post holds no hints about the cause of his unexpected demise, as it consists of only happy pics of him graduating. A GoFundMe has been started to fund his funeral expenses.
Who Is Arkansas Basketball Player Reggie Chaney?
Reggie Chaney was in the 2023 University of Houston team that went on to compete in the Final Four. His collegiate basketball career started in 2018. Hailing from Tulsa, Okla, he played for the University of Arkansas’ Razorbacks before transferring to the University of Houston.
He played there for the remainder of his undergraduate career. Chaney was applauded for his defensive play on a Houston team that went on to do 33-4 last season. He was slated to join the AE Psychiko, a Greek professional basketball team.
What Happened to Reggie Chaney?
Reggie Chaney, a former basketball player for the University of Houston, died on August 21, 2023, at 23. The University of Houston Men’s Basketball team said in their Twitter/ X post:
“We are heartbroken by the passing of forward Reggie Chaney. He will be deeply and intensely missed by everyone that loved and knew him.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover his funeral expenses. The fundraising page reads:
“Reggie Chaney was a force both on the court and off. He was born on September 6, 1999, and left this world unexpectedly on August 21, 2023. This GoFundMe was created with the permission of his mother, Mikki, to help with unplanned expenses that no mother should have to worry about in this time of unimaginable grief.”
The description also says that the money collected from the fundraiser will be directly given to Chaney’s immediate family. Even though Chaney’s life was unfortunately cut short, he was loved dearly by his coaches and teammates.
Chancellor Johnson, a sports journalist, wrote on Twitter/ X:
“Just to speak to who Reggie Chaney was as a person and player, here was Kelvin Sampson last October: ‘If I told Reggie to run through a brick wall, he would say ‘Coach can I get a running start.”
Renu Khator, the University of Houston’s President, expressed sorrow and said:
“The Cougar family mourns the loss of Reggie Chaney, the giant among giants of Houston basketball… the news has left us with sad and heavy hearts.”
His girlfriend, Shanalie Aaliyah, posted multiple Instagram stories on her account after she learned about his demise. The stories included him giving her thoughtful gifts. She had also called him her soulmate in a video of them together.
Chaney’s cause of death isn’t known yet. In his final Instagram post, Reggie didn’t hint at anything that might have threatened his life. Instead, he had posted photos of himself celebrating graduation from the University of Houston.
There have been no official reports about what happened to the upcoming player. Overall, his cause of death is a complete mystery. So, more information is awaited.
