“Staring at the ceiling” is the melancholic feeling that creeps in once in a while. And yesterday, the collective fell into the same creepy pit when Snapchat AI posted a somewhat unnerving story. A beige ceiling. That’s it.
People were obviously concerned over an unwarranted action from “My AI,” a built-in chatbox for Snapchat users. Usually, the My AI chat is used for getting trivia answers, recommendations for suitable gifts, places to visit, current job openings, restaurants, and more.
This was Snapchat’s attempt to generate more user engagement on the app, given its dwindling popularity over the last decade (Remember? When Kylie Jenner tweeted, “Who even uses Snapchat anymore?” and the stocks plummeted like a house of cards).
Snapchat users were left scratching their heads over a bizarre visual and several unanswered questions. But when users questioned about in the chatbox, they were ghosted by the AI.
Ever since Snapchat introduced this feature, users found it unnecessary feature and were finding ways to disable Snapchat AI. One user posted on Twitter– “THIS IS RIDICULOUS. STOP FISHING FOR MONEY AND TAKE IT OFF MY FEED.”
One could still remove My AI by either using the “Unpin” option or deleting the ChatBox entirely from the Privacy Controls in Settings. Read here for a quick guide to get rid of My AI.
Nevertheless, people couldn’t fathom the abrupt story… what was the purpose of the story? Whose ceiling is that? What does it imply? Is it a marketing strategy or a creepypasta gimmick?
But a lingering thought always remained– Is technology finally wreaking a war on humankind? Before getting more dramatic about it, read here for an explanation of why My AI went rogue for a day.
Is the Snapchat AI a Real Person?
Snapchat AI is not a real person. The My AI chat box is designed using ChatGPT prompts. The ChatBox was programmed to answer users’ questions in a factual and friendly manner. My AI has its own profile page that resembles the standard User page.
Snapchat also issued a warning to the users that since the chat box is still in the initial phase of development, users should refrain from sharing any personal information or financial details. Nor should you rely on the AI for completely accurate answers; these are programmed responses and may differ for person-to-person.
Why Is Snapchat AI Posting a Story?
If you see the top of the chat feed, you will always see My AI pinned there. Users found this update highly annoying, prompting one-star reviews on the App Store.
After several trial test runs, the AI still showed signs of concerning issues, including inappropriate responses to minors’ messages, as reported by The Washington Post. Later, Snapchat integrated safeguards and parental controls.
Then on one unfateful day, My AI posted this story. It was not comprehensible at first glance. But later, people reckoned that the flat beige area and the angle at which the snap was taken could be the ceiling of a room.
Users quickly typed in questions about this glitch story in the chat box. At first, there were no responses. Then Snapchat attempted to fix the bug with a default response: “Sorry, I encountered a technical issue ?”
The bug was not entirely fixed as My AI kept responding with more unambiguous statements like: “Hey, I’m a bit busy at the moment. Can we catch up later? ?”
Snapchat quickly clarified the post by stating that My AI has not yet developed self-awareness and the urge to express itself through Snapchat stories. It is simply a “technical outage.” And to make it clear, My AI has not snapped the ceiling of any user’s room.
Can Snapchat AI Track You?
No, Snapchat AI will not track your current location. It only stores the data that you have fed to the app. You can enable the Ghost Mode feature to hide your location from friends and followers.
Some people raised concerns over the recent glitch, fearing that Snapchat might be hacked and their data could be jeopardized. However, the spokesperson clarified, “My AI experienced a temporary outage that’s now resolved.”
What are your thoughts on the bizarre day of Snapchat? Do you believe there is more to the conspiracy, or is it just a technical glitch?
