Terrel Williams and Prichard Colon had one of the iconic matches at the Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia, on October 17, 2015. As they were budding welterweights who fought each other, it ended with Colón dreaming of having the WBC belt around his waist.
However, it was the time Colon entered the ring for the last time and was left paralyzed by the end.
In their match, Williams repeatedly dropped ‘rabbit punches,’ which is an illegal move, on Colon behind the back of his head. The back-of-the-head punches by Terrel Williams led to Colon slipping into a coma after the ninth round’s conclusion. The match left Terrel devastated, as he still prays for Prichard every day. He was warned for his actions, and he even took a break for two years after the match.
What Happened Between Terrel Williams & Prichard Colon?
The match between the two did not end as anyone would have expected. Terrel Williams dropped many illegal strikes on the back of Prichard Colon’s head, which caused him to lose the match as he ended up in the hospital.
In the match, Colon informed the referee about it, but he was asked to “take care of it.”
Williams kept throwing rabbit punches, which angered Colón, who then landed a low blow out of frustration. Prichard Colon complained about being dizzy to his doctor and also had a quick superficial examination and was later allowed to continue the fight.
In the 9th round, Colon was knocked out, struggled to his corner, and started to puke after the fight.
Later, he fell unconscious in the locker room, and the incident made everyone panic. Prichard was later rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with brain bleeding, where he slipped into a coma for over 200 days.
The incident made the wrestling community furious as the family of Prichard Colon also filed a lawsuit against Dr. Richard Ashby, HeadBangers Boxing, and DiBella Entertainment, seeking help to pay for his full-time care.
What Terrel Williams Has to Say About Prichard Colon?
The reaction against Terrel was wild, as he even felt the controversial win was too much for him.
Terrel Williams reveals that much malicious stuff was said about him by the Colon family, and he prays for Prichard’s health every day. In a conversation with the Ring TV, the boxer said,
“I pray for Prichard every day. That’s never going to change. I wish him nothing but peace and health. No one wants what happened to Prichard to happen to anybody. All boxers are brothers. I would never intentionally harm someone like that.”
Sharing about the backlash, he further added,
“But there has been a lot of malicious stuff that’s said about me, especially from the Colon family. If that is how they’re going to cope with it and it helps them heal, then that’s what it is.”
Terrel was put on an indefinite suspension from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission for his other match against David Grayton. He suffered an injury on his right hand, which reflects the controversial punches thrown during the match against Prichard Colon.
With all that, Terrel said that he would be healing for the rest of his life and also revealed that he never wanted to fight again after his match against Prichard Colon.
