What Happened to Liam Vesey?
Liam Vesey’s tragic passing away at the young age of 18 has profoundly impacted those who knew him. Although, for now, the reason for his passing away remains unknown, his brother Brendan shared a heartfelt message on the GoFundMe page, recounting the loss of his brother Liam to suicide on January 8.
For the unversed, Liam was a friendly and sociable individual, deeply involved in the GAA community. Notably, he played a role in Belturbet’s previous year’s story in the ACFL Reserve Division 2. In response to his untimely death, recently, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by Brendan to support a cause dedicated to preventing suicide.
Brendan Vesey, who spearheaded the GoFundMe effort, has planned a week-long journey on the Camino trail in Spain alongside his friend Liam Coll. Their objective is to raise funds for SOSAD, an organization committed to raising awareness about and preventing suicide in Ireland.
For the unversed, Liam Vesey, who sadly passed away on January 8, was a member of a large family comprising one sister and seven brothers. He was also an active part of the Belturbet Rory O’Moore’s GAA club, where his absence is deeply felt, and his memory is honored as a “dear friend and teammate.”
The sorrow brought by this tragedy was also shared by local councilor Brendan Fay, who acknowledged the significant impact Liam’s passing had on the Belturbet community. In addition, The Bounce Back Youth Hub in Belturbet paid their respects to Liam with an emotional tribute, further highlighting the positive influence he had on the community.
A message posted on the club’s Facebook page,
“We are all deeply saddened by the tragic news which we learned this morning about the passing of our dear friend and teammate, Liam, and indeed a dark cloud hangs over the whole town and broader community today.”
“As a club, and as a community, it’s important now more than ever that we all rally together in support of the Vesey family, and of one another.”
What Is Cavan GAA?
Cavan GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) refers to the organization responsible for promoting and governing Gaelic games, such as Gaelic football and hurling, within County Cavan in Ireland. The GAA is deeply ingrained in Irish culture and significantly fosters sports, community engagement, and cultural identity.
Cavan GAA oversees various activities related to Gaelic games, including organizing competitions, coaching, player development, and promoting the values and traditions associated with these sports. The county’s GAA teams participate in inter-county competitions at different levels, from local to national tournaments.

Liam’s body will rest at Lawlor’s Funeral Home (H14 R583) on Tuesday, January 10th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
On Wednesday morning, January 11th, his body was transported from his residence. The departure is scheduled for 11:30 AM, with the destination being St. Mary’s Church in Staghall. A Funeral Mass is planned to commence at noon, and afterward, he was laid to rest in the adjacent cemetery.
