Can we separate the craft/skills/art from the artist/athlete/individual? Should a person be held responsible for their misconduct even though they have a roster of benevolence?
Jim Brown epitomizes this dichotomy as a series of allegations, scandals, and controversies tarnish his legacy.
Brown, one of the greatest NFL players to grace the sport’s history, passed away on Thursday at 87. He was considered a civil rights icon, paving the way for other visionaries and using his influence as a sportsperson to advocate for racial justice.
Hence, people are split on whether to pay respects or to start the discourse on a myriad of his controversies.
Jim Brown, an NFL legend, actor, and activist, was accused of domestic violence, harassment, assault, threatening & intimidation, and an attempt to murder.
What Are the Accusations Against Jim Brown?
There is no denying that Jim Brown is one of the greatest NFL players even today. He earned several honors, including the Pro Bowl and eight first-team All-pro. He led the team to victory at the NFL Championship in 1964.
You best believe that people respected and admired him to the point of worshipping. After stellar records, he retired at the age of 30 and ventured into acting. This gained him even more popularity and influence.
To top this, he was well known for his philanthropic work. He founded a non-profit “Amer-I-Can” organization that aids ex-convicts, gang members, and prisoners to get back on track and integrate them into society. Besides, he was also the face of various civil rights initiatives.
The bottom line is: Brown was a legend and too big to fail….or rather, jail.
Brown was accused several times of violent behavior towards women and openly condoning misogyny.
- Assault and raping a teenager: Brown allegedly beat up an 18-year-old Brenda Ayers in his hotel room and then raped her. The jury found him not guilty of assault and battery.
- Attempt to murder a model: Model Eva Bohn-Chin was found beneath Brown’s balcony of the second-floor apartment. The investigators ruled it an intent to murder, but Eva refused to name her assailant, due to which the charges were dropped against Brown based on insufficient evidence.
- Assaulting his golfing partner: Brown choked and pounded his golfing partner, Frank Snow. He was sentenced to one day in prison, fined $500, and received two years of probation.
- Rape and beating: Within a span of one year, Brown was charged with raping and physically assaulting a 33-year-old woman and then his ex-girlfriend Debra Clark. In the first case, the judge dismissed due to inconsistent testimony, and in the other case, Clark refused to press charges.
- Domestic violence: The NFL player was arrested after noise complaints of a major conflict with his wife, Monique Gunthrop Brown. He also reportedly threatened to kill her. He was later found guilty of obliterating his wife’s car with a shovel. Instead of a prison sentence, he was let go easy with just three years’ probation, one year of domestic violence counseling, and 400 hours of community service with a fine of $1800.
Jim Brown’s Controversies Explained
Besides harming women, Brown was also set in his beliefs (whether they were right or not is open for discussion).
Brown had stern conservative political views. At one point, he criticized the civil rights movement. His beef with Representative John Lewis was a public affair. He also received criticism for supporting Donald Trump.
