In 2011, a short film titled “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons” was released, which sparked a great deal of controversy due to its disturbing subject matter. The film tells the story of a father who is sexually abusing his son and the son’s attempts to confront him about it.

It was controversial because of its graphic and unsettling portrayal of sexual abuse, and many viewers found it difficult to watch.

Despite its controversial subject matter, “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons” was praised by some critics for its bold and thought-provoking approach to a difficult topic. The film’s director, Ari Aster, has said that he wanted to explore the taboo subject of incest in a way that was both respectful and unsettling.

While the film is certainly not for everyone, its impact on the world of independent cinema cannot be denied. Here’s where you can watch it fully!

My favorite thing on TikTok right now is people finding out about Aster’s 2011 short film THE STRANGE THINGS ABOUT THE JOHNSONS 😅

For those interested in thought-provoking dramas, The Strange Thing About The Johnsons, an award-winning short film directed by Aster, is now available for viewing on both YouTube and Vimeo. The film delves into the lives of an average suburban family and features actors Billy Mayo, Brandon Greenhouse, and Angela Bullock.

However, the plot takes a dark and controversial turn as it explores the father’s involvement in an abusive and incestuous relationship with his son.

It is worth mentioning that Aster initially created this film as part of his graduate school thesis at the American Film Institute in California, which shows the amount of effort and dedication he put into the project. The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah on January 22, 2011, and received critical acclaim.

And the second thing.

He sadly passed in 2019.

However, it was not until November of the same year that the film was leaked online and quickly gained viral popularity.

Despite its success, The Strange Thing About The Johnsons’ polarizing themes sparked a mixed reaction among viewers. Some criticized the portrayal of an African American family by a white filmmaker, while others praised the film for its raw and honest depiction of taboo subjects.

Regardless of where one stands, it is undeniable that The Strange Thing About The Johnsons is a unique and thought-provoking piece of cinema that challenges societal norms and pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable to portray on screen.

No. The horror-thriller is not based on any true incident; in fact, a mere work of fiction.

“The Johnsons’ Strange Thing” is a poignant literary work that delves into the profound impact that trauma can have on an individual, irrespective of their social status or position in life. It is a thought-provoking piece that portrays the reality of this issue in a manner that allows us, as onlookers, to appreciate better and comprehend the gravity of its implications.

This work serves as a compelling reminder of the need for greater empathy and understanding toward those who have experienced trauma, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Now that you know where to stream the short film, watch the 29-minute-long horror-thriller flick and let us know how you found it. Do you think it is okay to explore darker themes and that makers should enjoy that liberty?

Why do you think most people find it offensive and label it “controversial”? What is your take on the movie? Let us know below!
