After sailing through many controversies, fans finally got to witness the ending of the much-talked mini-series The Idol.

The Abel Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp starrer not only marked the singer’s debut as an actor but also made fans excited to witness his acting abilities in the series.

#THEIDOL is 5 episodes of such utter nonsense it baffles me! Other than #LillyRose being a clear standout, its just lewd sequences, abuse & lacks any form of depth barring a symbolic twist in the end.

It's so uneventful, its just TEDIOUS! 🙈 pic.twitter.com/UcNUDq9IHe

Since the inception and the debut of the first episode, there were questions that most of the viewers sought answers to at the end of the last episode. However, the finale episode only made it worse, giving them the biggest plot twist of the season.

Did Jocelyn Lie About Her Mom?

What the actual fuck?!! Where was this scene in episode 1?? #THEIDOL #TheIdolHBO pic.twitter.com/HowjMbCCIT

What we learned in the finale episode is that the makers’ vain attempt at giving the viewers the biggest plot twist that they could possibly deliver.

Episode five of the series shows a contended Jocelyn trying to make the best out of her career now that Tedros is in the past for her. Soon enough, Jocelyn has an encounter with Tedros at her show. This scene is what turned the whole series upside down, or at least, according to the makers.

Tedros comes across the infamous comb that took all of the limelight in the last episode. Once alleged by Jocelyn as the comb that her mother used to abuse her with, it now looks brand new to Tedros, and he’s baffled glancing at it. Upon being asked, all Jocelyn does is gives him a cocky smile. This is when Tedros learns that it wasn’t him but Jocelyn, who had been using him for her own good all this time.

Jocelyn’s move is rather left for the viewers’ speculation. Still, it doesn’t take for a genius to know that Jocelyn had been lying about her mother and her abuse all along, just to get the sympathy that she got from Tedros and his family. Also playing the ‘victim card’ to re-brand her image after her disastrous tour failure shown at the start of the series.

Yes, Jocelyn lied about her mother and the abuse part of her life. Not only does Jocelyn trick Tedros and others into thinking she is a victim, but the finale episode also unveils her as the real manipulator that Tedros thought he was.

What’s seen after that is Jocelyn calling up Tedros on stage, announcing that he was the love of her life and that she wouldn’t let go of him, ever. This scene, in particular, also got fans scratching their heads, like many other sequences of the series- did Jocelyn try to get rid of Tedros, only to confess her love to him at the end? This, like many sequences, just doesn’t fit right.

Will There Be The Idol Season 2?

After leaving fans with a rancid plot twist at the end of the first season, makers have clarified from their end that a second season is not what they’re looking at right now.

The Weeknd, who plays Tedros in the series, even called the mini-series a five-hour movie, stating that the HBO series might not get renewed for a new season.

The possibility of a second season is still considerable, especially after Jocelyn scapegoated Tedros with her lies throughout the first season. Jocelyn did come across as more robust and influential than Tedros in that last scene.

Viewers get to witness Jocelyn emerging as the star and having the power that Tedros craved for the series. The shift in the power dynamics of Tedros and Jocelyn perhaps can be a crucial element of the possible next season.

Whether or not The Idol was a hit is upto viewers’ discretion, but the mini-series has for sure made headlines since its debut episode, right from people alleging that The Weeknd’s venture into the acting might be detrimental to his musical career to the sex scenes that most viewers found unnecessary. The Idol managed to withstand all of it, one controversy at a time.

The Idol is available to stream at Max.

Do you think the makers should consider renewing another season? Do you think Tedros will seek revenge for being manipulated?

Was Jocelyn the bigger player than Tedros? Let us know what you think!
