In a recent behind-the-scenes video for NCT 127’s winter single “Be There For Me,” a brief clip showed NCT member Haechan with a stick resembling a cigarette. This sparked discussions among netizens about indoor smoking and compliance with regulations.
Some raised concerns about indoor smoking, while others said it was just an energy bar he was eating. But what was he holding? Was it a cigarette?
In a recent behind-the-scenes video for NCT 127’s winter single “Be There For Me,” Haechan was briefly spotted with an e-cigarette. On January 11, 2023, SM Entertainment confirmed his use of the electronic cigarette and his intention to pay a fine for the violation. Additionally, Haechan had been diagnosed with severe tonsillitis, necessitating a temporary hiatus for recovery.
Explained: What Is NCT Haechan’s Cigarette Controversy?
In a recent behind-the-scenes practice video for NCT 127’s winter single, “Be There For Me,” NCT member Haechan briefly appeared with an e-cigarette in hand.
This footage caught the attention of netizens, sparking discussions about indoor smoking and adherence to regulations within the K-pop industry.
Some netizens expressed concern over indoor smoking, questioning why celebrities, such as Haechan, would disregard smoking laws.
On the other hand, defenders argued that Haechan might have received permission from the company to smoke indoors.
They also pointed out the challenges idols face, especially regarding privacy and security concerns, which make it difficult for them to smoke in public spaces.
The controversy surrounding this incident led to the editing of the behind-the-scenes video, removing the scene in question. However, it didn’t stop some netizens from reportedly filing charges against Haechan, alleging a violation of indoor smoking laws.
Comparisons were also drawn to a previous incident involving EXO’s D.O., who faced fines for smoking inside a waiting room.
On January 11, 2023, SM Entertainment confirmed that Haechan was indeed using an electronic cigarette and would pay a fine for this improper act. In their statement, SM Entertainment expressed their regret over the incident, stating:
“We have confirmed that Haechan used an electronic cigarette indoors in NCT 127’s dance practice video released on January 10th. Today (January 11), he intends to pay the fine imposed by the health department responsible for this matter.”
They further apologized and said:
“We sincerely apologize for causing concern to many through this irresponsible behavior. We will pay special attention to ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future.”
It’s important to note that just days prior, on January 9, SM Entertainment announced that Haechan would need to take a break from his activities due to a health issue.
While in Japan for planned activities, Haechan returned to Korea on January 8, experiencing flu symptoms and a high fever. Following a hospital visit, he was diagnosed with severe tonsillitis, requiring a temporary hiatus to ensure proper recovery.
Unfortunately, Haechan couldn’t participate in the recent Circle Chart Music Awards 2023 held on January 10.
NCT DREAM, comprised of Mark, Jeno, Jisung, Jaemin, Renjun, and Chenle, attended the event as a six-member group.
SM Entertainment assured fans that decisions regarding Haechan’s future engagements would depend on the progress of his recovery, with regular updates promised.
What do you think of this e-cigarette fiasco? Do you believe Haechan shouldn’t have smoked online? Or should fans have maintained their distance and given their idol some space?
