It’s been almost seven years since Damien Chazelle gave us one of the classic musical-romantic movies of our time!
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s magical performance in the movie and an exceptional and out-of-the-box script helped the film fetch a magnificent 14 Oscar nominations, of which the film successfully won 6.
It’s been seven years, and the film still manages to woo the hearts of audiences, but equally makes them curious about many aspects of the film. Read to know it all!
Do Mia and Sebastian End Up Together?
No. Mia and Sebastian are no longer together in the movie after they decide to officially part ways.
We see this in the movie when Mia and Sebastian, after struggling all along with their career and facing rejections, finally decide to part ways but with a promise that they’d love each other, no matter what the circumstances, even if that means they had to love each other from a distance.
But destiny has different plans for the two as they achieve success in life, finally getting the life they’ve always wanted. Fast forward to some years later, we see Mia happily married to David, which only proves that Mia’s love story with Sebastian has come to an end.
Although in a sequence when Mia and Davin run into Sebastian’s Jazz club randomly, Mia is forced to imagine her life with Sebastian as she thinks of how their lives could’ve turned up if they were to be together.
We see Mia having a flashback of her time with Sebastian from the beginning, but only this time around, she has an alternate ending with him. It is shown how their lives could’ve changed for good if they didn’t do what they chose to do.
From ignoring Mia the day he lost his job to Mia giving a successful audition, we see how their life decisions have impacted their relationship, eventually making them part ways.
What Did the End of La La Land Mean?
Towards the absolute end of the movie, we see both the movie’s protagonists, Sebastian and Mia, achieve what they always aspired for throughout their life, but without each other by their side.
We see Mia becoming the successful actress she always wanted to be, with Sebastian also having his own Jazz Club. Both have attained fame and success but aren’t together anymore.
Mia is out on a romantic date night with her husband David, who is also the father of her son; as the duo enters a Jazz Club, Mia knows it is connected to Sebastian as she spots the name of the club ‘Seb’s’ something she has recommended to Sebastian when they were together.
We see Sebastian playing inside the club, with people finally enjoying Jazz the way he has always liked it- the traditional version. Mia is happy to see Sebastian finally achieving what he struggled for all his life as we see Mia imagining her one final dance with Sebastian, thinking of how their life could have been if they had ended up together.
Mia’s imagination doesn’t last long, as she is brought back to reality within the next snap, drawing a line between her imagination and reality. We see Mia and Sebastian finally smiling at each other as they both acknowledge their new life apart from each other now, as the movie ends.
Why Did La La Land Have a Sad Ending?
Rather than drawing a black or white line, it would be most appropriate to say that the movie has a realistic ending.
Unline romantic movies where the main leads fight against all odds to make their love survive, La La Land shows evidence that it’s not the case every time and that sometimes love alone isn’t enough to keep two people together. Mia and Sebastian had their time and could’ve decided to face the highs and lows of their careers together, but instead, their love somehow couldn’t withstand all the turbulence their professional life had to offer.
The ending only proves that just because a story doesn’t end with “happily ever after,” it doesnt mean there wasn’t any love!
Why Didn’t Mia and Sebastian End Up Together?
Although Mia and Sebastian eventually start catching feelings for each other and end up being in a relationship, things are not as dreamy on their professional front as their love life is.
We see both the main leads struggling with their careers, Mia facing rejections in her auditions one after the other and Sebastian in his quest to prove to the world his love for Jazz Music.
Their relationship is also affected by bouts of misunderstandings; as Sebastian manages to get stability with music with him becoming famous at some point, we see Mia still struggling with her dream of becoming an actress.
When Sebastian decides to ditch his love for traditional Jazz for modern, which earns him fame and recognition, Mia reminds him that he has somehow managed to lose his real identity. Sebastian thinks Mia is downright jealous of his success, and Mia feels abandoned, with Sebastian caught only by his newfound fame.
From here, everything goes downhill for the couple as they finally decide that they must navigate their careers, even if that means leaving each other from a distance. In the end, we see Mia and Sebastian achieve success in life at the cost of their relationship.
Who Does Mia from La La Land End Up With?
Mia ends up with a man named David, with whom she is married and shares a son. Very less is shown in the movie about David, as we only see him as Mia’s husband.
What Is the Main Message of La La Land?
The Oscar-winning movie only goes out to prove that loving someone always doesnt mean ending up together with them. That distance has a little role to play in affecting your feelings for someone if they’re genuine enough.
This is seen through Mia and Sebastian, as the two still have love for each other in their hearts, even though they somehow lost a part of themselves navigating their professional life. The movie also shows us what transformational power love holds and how it can act as a catalyst pushing us to chase our desires and dreams against all odds.
When a dejected Mia lets her career go for a toss, owing to repeated failures, Sebastian’s love acts like a driving force for her to achieve her dreams. Sebastian wanted Mia to pursue her love for acting against all risks and difficulties, even if that meant they had to be separated.
The movie can perhaps be quoted as a classic example of “unconditional love”, proving that when you really love someone, their happiness is all that matters; even if you aren’t part of it anymore!
La La Land is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
