Jujutsu Kaisen: How Did Gojo Survive Toji? Who Really Is Toji Fushigoro & Is Satoru Gojo Dead?

Just three episodes in, and season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen has already dropped the biggest bomb on us. Our beloved, invincible is not only thoroughly defeated but also seems dead.

How is that possible? Isn’t he the GOAT? How can anyone evade the Six Eyes? All these questions must be swimming through your mind.

So let’s look at how Toji orchestrated Gojo and Riko’s assassination first and then move on to how Gojo is still alive in the ongoing manga.

How Did Toji Fushiguro Defeat Gojo?

Toji constructed a three-step plan to eliminate Gojo and take control of the plasma vessel, Riko. First, he tired Gojo out by making him use his ability non-stop without rest so his senses could be dulled. Second, he got Gojo to relax his guard by making it look like Riko was safe. Thirdly, he disguised his special-grade cursed weapon among the flies and stopped Gojo’s cursed technique.

Toji’s plan might seem simple, but it took immense foresight and calculation to isolate Gojo and make him put his guard down voluntarily. So let’s get into more details of this magnificent ‘Kill Mr. Hotshot Six-Eyes’ plan.

Firstly, let’s clear it up that Toji is by no means stronger than Gojo, which is why he needed an elaborate plan to take the latter down. The first step was to post a bounty on Riko with a time limit. This lured people to keep attacking the team, which caused Geto and Gojo to be constantly alert. All this while Toji patiently waited for Gojo to lose his touch.

When the time was up, Gojo relaxed, allowing Toji to sneak into his defenses without detection as he did not have cursed energy or technique. This is also why he could get into the school’s barriers.

In an attempt to save Riko, Ghetto took her away while an exhausted Gojo stayed back to fight Toji. Gojo’s next step was to clear the nearby grounds so Toji could not sneak attack again. However, he was swarmed by cursed fleas who disguised the Special Grade Cursed Tool Toji was carrying.

Gojo could not anticipate the direction of the attack, and the spear pierced his entire torso, followed by one of his legs.

Why Didn’t Gojo Sense Toji Fushigoro and His Cursed Weapon?

The later chapters of the manga explain why Gojo never sensed the cursed weapons on Toji. Toji uses a cursed spirit to store his cursed weapons. The spirit shrinks by storing itself n its own body, and Toji then ingests it. As Toji is an invisible man due to his absence of cursed energy, he becomes the perfect shield to keep the weapons from being noticed.

Toji is a non-curse user with no talent for jujutsu. However, he is an elite fighter. His most terrifying trait is his frighteningly calm and orchestrating mind.

All in all, he could catch Gojo by surprise as he did not have any cursed energy and created an elaborate plan to deceive him. 

Is Gojo Killed by Toji? Is Gojo Dead?

No, rest assured, Satoru Gojo has not been killed by Toji. Although the wound he received in episode 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 is fatal, and he looks as dead as possible, he has not passed away yet.

The cliffhanger made fans panic about the welfare of their favorite narcissist, but if you have been following the maga even a bit, you know that he is still alive. In fact, he is so powerful that he could only be sealed in the Shibuya arc.

How Did Gojo Recover from Toji Slaying Him?

Gojo used Reverse Cursed Technique to revive himself after Toji slayed him. Gojo later explained that when he was stabbed in the neck, instead of defending himself, he fully concentrated on perfecting the technique.

Cursed energy uses negative energy, so it can fortify the body but cannot help regenerate it. That’s why it was necessary to multiply the negative with more negative energy to create a positive. (Just like how negative and negative forms a positive in maths) This is the Reverse Technique.

Gojo could not use this technique before, but only when he was on the brink of death could he concentrate all his energy on releasing unexplored potential.

If Toji had cut off Gojo’s head or used the cursed tool to stab him in the head, then Gojo would not have survived.

So there, we have it; Gojo tapped into his GOAT abilities to overcome death itself. He even had an awakening making him even more powerful than before.
