This Wednesday, October 25, 2023, Lewiston, Maine, experienced a mass shooting that killed around 18 people by a 40-year-old Robert Card, a US Army reservist.
However, instead of being caught after the series of massacres, the perpetrator has been at large for a couple of days, with no sight of his whereabouts. So, is the suspect, Robert Card, dead yet?
Robert Card, the mass shooter who took the lives of 18 people across Lewiston, was found dead on Friday night at around 7:45 p.m. near a recycling plant in Lisbon. The confirmation of his death arrived from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, who informed that the suspect had shot himself dead.
Is Maine Shooting Suspect Robert Card Dead?
Although the mass shooter who reportedly killed 18 people since Wednesday was on the loose for the past two days, he was recently confirmed dead by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
The body was found on Friday night at around 7:45 p.m., near a recycling plant in Lisbon that is around 10 miles from Lewiston, according to the sources who informed CBS News.
Following the development in the case, Mike Sauschuck, the Maine Department’s commissioner, told in a news conference the same night that the suspect shot himself and died of a self-inflicted injury.
The law enforcement officials found the body of the suspect near the Androscoggin River, where Robert Card’s vehicle, a white Subaru Outback, was also abandoned by the river.
After learning about the unfortunate incident, President Biden also released a statement on Friday, explaining that he would address the mass shooting issues in the country. In his words,
“Americans should not have to live like this. I once again call on Republicans in Congress to fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe. Until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. The Lewiston community – and all Americans – deserve nothing less.”
It was also revealed that the officials had found a note on the suspect’s body, but they did not disclose the information, which would possibly be related to the reason why this US Army reservist opted to commit such atrocities.
Before his body was found, police conducted several searches in the vicinity where the murders had taken place, including a house in Bowdoin where the suspect had stayed before.
While that attempt failed, they continued the searches by employing divers who went underwater in the Androscoggin River, near where the abandoned vehicle was found, but they didn’t find the suspect.
Instead, they managed to find the weapon the suspect used to kill the innocents and a cell phone, which they are trying to obtain information from as we speak.
While we’re not sure why he committed these murders, an undisclosed US Army reservist who previously worked with Robert Card reported that the suspect had mental health issues prior to the incident.
In July, the suspect reportedly behaved strangely and was taken to a mental health facility for a couple of weeks to get treatment. Investigators are currently looking for any clues that may lead to Card’s intent behind going rogue.
Seeing as how victims ranged from the age of 14 to 76, it may have been a psychotic massacre inflicted by giving into his unstable emotions, but we await more details from the officials before reaching a conclusion.
So, what do you think about the death of Robert Card? Should there be gun control laws implemented in the United States to prevent similar shootings in the future?
