Ivan Cornejo, a 19-year-old singer-songwriter, was helmed in the limelight of social media, but for the reasons least expected.
TikTok now seems like an obituary equivalent of social media where celebrities are declared dead more frequently; even the queen of heartbreaks, Taylor Swift, was not spared.
The latest victim of the death hoax is Mexican sweetheart Ivan Cornejo. Since 6th June, rumors have been floating on TikTok that Ivan had died in a lethal car accident. This left the fan perplexed, even recording their reactions to the heartbreaking news. But one ripple was enough to create a hurricane of misinformation.
The rumors that Ivan Cornejo has died in a car accident are false, as the young singer keeps thriving in the music industry.
How Did Ivan’s Death Rumors Start on TikTok?
One Tweet by a TikTok user, Gaby– @gBaby_md, stated that she was pranked into believing that Ivan Cronejo had died in a car accident. Her tweet went viral, planting a speckle of suspicion among other users.
However, such pranking is a regular content schtick on TikTok where kids trick their parents into thinking their favorite singer is no more. Their reactions are recorded, which results in pure disbelief, instant grief, or absolute rage. Users often enjoy these reactions, but we often forget that a real person is involved, and we are enjoying ourselves at the expense of the “news” of someone’s demise.
These rumors were spiked further when a TikTok user, @bdn_danbro, Danny Cervantes, shared an unsettling video of him “dying.” Then he claimed he was revived when one of Ivan Cornjeo’s songs started playing.
These baseless rumors have done nothing but diminish the credibility of the source of information. While a prank does not harm, it can create a fake perception and may also hurt the sentiments of the celebrity involved.
Nevertheless, Ivan is too young to be subjected to such vile rumors. But the good news is he is focused on his work, as the fans anticipate his new album to be dropped any day now.
How Did Ivan Cornejo Rise To Fame?
Ivan Cornejo was born in Riverside, California, in 2004. With keen ears for rhythm, he started his musical journey at just 8 years old, the first time he picked up a guitar. He learned to play the instrument for Youtube tutorials and never looked back since then. Ivan mastered the craft with his first cover of La Bamba by Ritchie Valens.
Ivan Cornejo was also interested in songwriting, fueled by his first heartbreak in middle school, inspiring his first lyrics. His Mexican-rooted sounds juxtaposed with other musical influences shaped his songwriting. He told in a Billboard interview:
“My brother would listen to alt-rock like Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala, and my parents listened to Café Tacvba. Very on the alternative side.”
His coming-of-age evolved him into a mesmerizing musician as his debut album, Alma Vacia (translation: Empty Soul), went on to climb the charts parallel to his career trajectory. The album peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Regional Mexican Albums and number 7 on the Top Latin Albums Charts. At the same time, the album won the Regional Album Of The Year award.
Cornejo explored more genres with his second album, Dañado, which added more flavors to his musical perception. Alternative Rock fused with Mexican beats is a combination none of us were ready for. The album peaked at number 1 on Regional Mexican Albums Chart and entered at #28 on Billboard 200 chart.
But to truly experience euphoria with music, his single Está Dañada is a must on your playlist. This cultural reset song spread like wildfire on TikTok. Cornejo was grateful for this appreciation, as he stated in an interview with Billboard:
“Social media has played a really important role on my music because without it, all the trends on TikTok have really helped build up my music.”
Regardless, it seems like Ivan is unhinged with the death hoaxes, and we are rooting for his musical career.
