It’s easy to quickly forget about pressing and crucial matters in this age of social media dominance. After all, there are uncountable matters to pay attention to every day.
These show up on everyone’s homepage, no matter the social media platform they are using, and people keep scrolling from one news to the next. As a result, many tend to forget to follow up on previous crucial cases.
The same thing happened in the Megan Thee Stallion case. The rapper accused Tory Lanez of shooting her in her foot after the two left a Kylie Jenner party being hosted in her home in 2020. Lanez had pleaded not guilty. So what’s the outcome of the case? It has finally been decided.
A jury found rapping sensation Tory Lanez guilty of all charges in the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion in 2020 outside a Los Angeles party. After seven hours of deliberation, Tory Lanez received a maximum of 22 years and eight months. Recently, a judge in Los Angeles sentenced him to 10 years in prison. To make matters worse, once he is done serving his sentence, he could be deported to his home country of Canada.
How Much Time Will Tory Lanez Serve?
Megan Thee Stallion accused Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, of shooting her in her foot when they left a 2020 party held at Kylie Jenner’s home. Lanez was initially charged with carrying an unregistered and loaded firearm in a vehicle, as well as assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
The prosecutors then added another charge to his list. This one was negligently discharging a firearm. Lanez had pleaded not guilty to shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Also, he had made an entire album where he rebutted and refuted her version of the events. The jury finally decided that Lanez would face a 22-year and eight months maximum sentence after deliberating for 7 hours.
Along with this, he could get deported to Canada, his home country, after he finishes his sentence. A Los Angeles judge finally sentenced him to 10 years in jail. As per CNBC, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón complimented Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, for her courage in 2022 after the jury decision. The attorney said:
“You (Megan) showed incredible courage and vulnerability with your testimony despite repeated and grotesque attacks that you did not deserve. You faced unjust and despicable scrutiny that no woman should ever face, and you have been an inspiration to others across LA County and the nation.”
In July 2020, officials in Hollywood Hills stopped an SUV with Megan Thee Stallion, Tory Lanez, and two others in it. Megan initially told the police that her foot had got cut on the glass when they asked why she was bleeding. She was transported to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in an ambulance, where the doctors found micro bullet fragments embedded in her foot.
These were surgically removed. Megan had confessed that she couldn’t walk for some time due to the incident. She had previously revealed that she still had nerve damage and couldn’t really feel her left foot’s side. Also, the rapper said:
“I couldn’t walk for a while… The back of my feet are always sore, but I just push through it.”
The rapper also said that Lanez had offered the sum of $1 million to her to keep quiet about the shooting incident. But many didn’t understand why she initially lied to the police. The award-winning rapper explained the reason in a Gayle King interview. She had stated that it was to prevent the tense situation from further escalating:
“You think I’m about to tell the police that we … us Black people got a gun in the car? You want me to tell that we got a gun in the car so they can shoot all of us up?”
The sentencing of Tory Lanez will indeed shut up Megan Thee Stallion’s detractors, who had doubted her and accused her of lying.
What do you think of the sentence that Tory Lanez received?
Was it adequate for the crime or too much? Do you think that everyone who doubted Megan Thee Stallion will now be silenced?
