M*A*S*H, adapted from the 1970 film of the same name, is a revered war-themed medical sitcom that has attained cult classic status in American television.

Despite the backdrop of war, the show provided a unique form of escapism and tackled serious issues rarely explored in sitcoms.

Its ensemble of unforgettable characters keeps attracting new fans, even though several original cast members have since passed away.

So, who are still with us?

Five major M*A*S*H actors who are still alive include Loretta Swit, known as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan, Jamie Farr as Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger, and Gary Burghoff, who portrayed Radar. There’s also Mike Farrell, who played Captain BJ Hunnicut, and Alan Alda as Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, who took the role just hours before filming started.

Loretta Swit (born on November 4, 1937) succeeded Sally Kellerman as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan when the character transitioned to television in 1972.

She stayed with the series throughout its 11-season run, despite a desire to leave after season eight. Swit earned Emmy nominations for her performance in all seasons except the first.

Jamie Farr:

Jamie Farr (born July 1, 1934) portrayed Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger, known for his cross-dressing antics, in M*A*S*H, which led to ongoing work opportunities after the show’s conclusion.

In 2005, he became part of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Professional Advisory Board and remains actively engaged with M*A*S*H fans through frequent appearances at conventions across the United States.

Gary Burghoff:

Gary Burghoff (born May 24, 1943) portrayed the beloved character Radar in both film and television versions of M*A*S*H.

Mike Farrell (born February 6, 1939) is renowned for his role as Captain BJ Hunnicut, but before his entertainment career, he served in the United States Marines from 1957 to 1959.

Beyond his acting success, Farrell dedicates his time to environmental causes like Greenpeace and actively engages in politics.

Alan Alda:

M*A*S*H is the greatest show ever and the new Highlight series on Hulu is beyond phenomenal! I’ve loved every second of this show since 8 years old. Even named my cat after Charles Emerson 🤪 🩷 #MASHTheComedyThatChangedTelevision

His career includes appearances in three Oscar-nominated Best Picture films: “The Aviator” (2004), “Bridge of Spies” (2015), and “Marriage Story” (2019).

Fans of the series can continue to enjoy their favorite stars from the main cast at conventions and in new television and film roles, as most of the original cast members remain active in the entertainment industry.

Which M*A*S*H Actors Have Passed Away?

The cast members from M*A*S*H who are sadly not with us anymore are:

Larry Linville:

Larry Linville who played Maj Burns on #mash4077 was a great actor (classically trained) and great guy! https://t.co/XxSNtg9HXm

— Phil Redo (@PhilRedo1) January 1, 2024

Actor Larry Linville, best known for his portrayal of the bumbling Major Frank Burns, passed away on April 10, 2000.

His death was attributed to complications from pneumonia, which had plagued him during his final months.

Just two years before his demise, Linville underwent surgery to remove a malignant lung tumor. Despite a lifelong acting career, it’s his role as Major Burns that remains etched in our memories.

William Christopher:

William Christopher, who brought the gentle and compassionate Father John Mulcahy to life, passed away at the age of 84.

His battle with non-lung small cell carcinoma ended, leaving behind his wife, Barbara Christopher, and their sons, John and Ned.

Christopher’s acting journey included appearances on notable shows like The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, Hogan’s Heroes, That Girl, and Nichols before he became Father Mulcahy.

Harry Morgan:

Colonel Sherman T. Potter, played by Harry Morgan, was a beloved character on M*A*S*H. Morgan, who passed away at the age of 96, had a rich career with over 100 films to his name.

The star left behind a loving family, including his wife, Barbara Bushman, three sons, and eight grandchildren.

His enduring friendship with co-star Mike Farrell is a testament to the camaraderie forged on the set of the show.

David Ogden Stiers:

The erudite and snobby Major Charles Emerson Winchester III was brought to life by David Ogden Stiers.

After a courageous battle against bladder cancer, Stiers passed away in 2018. He stepped into the role to fill the void left by Larry Linville’s departure, creating a character that stood in stark contrast to Major Burns.

Beyond his acting career, Stiers served as the resident conductor of the Newport Symphony Orchestra.

Kellye Nakahara:

Lieutenant Kellye Yamato, portrayed by Kellye Nakahara, was a beloved character on M*A*S*H. She battled cancer with grace and humor before passing away in 2020 at the age of 72.

These actors, in their respective roles, contributed to the timeless appeal of M*A*S*H, leaving behind legacies that continue to be cherished by fans worldwide.
