In a statement released by Carl Weathers’ family, the specific cause of his death wasn’t revealed. But they mentioned that he passed away “peacefully in his sleep.” Here’s the complete statement (via People magazine):

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep. Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Carl Weathers had a diverse and illustrious career that spanned beyond Hollywood. Before becoming a Hollywood legend, he was an NFL linebacker for the Oakland Raiders in the early ’70s. 

His transition from football to acting began in 1973, marking the start of a remarkable journey.
