Like her, hate her, or feel pity for her, Furina is a constant presence. The 4.2 trailer showed Furina getting punished with death by the Oratice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale.
This surprised many because it’s rare for an Archon/ citizen to get capital punishment. Now, the update is finally here. So it’s time to discuss the one thing that has got the Genshin fandom speculating wildly-
Did Furina die?
No, Furina didn’t die. But she is now an ordinary human with an average human lifespan. This happened because when she and the God of Justice, Focalors, were put on trial, Focalors killed herself to save Fontaine from the prophecy. After that, Furina abdicated.
Did Furina Die In Genshin?
The latest 4.2 update of Genshin Impact reveals that Furina is Focalors, the God of Justice’s human vessel. She is separated from godhood and oversees the region of Fontaine as the false Hydro Archon.
Egeria, the former Hydro Archon, chose Focalors, an Oceanid, as her successor. When Focalors ascended, she divided her body into two parts- a spirit and a body. She remained as the spirit while making her body Furina.
Her Gnosis was kept in the divine half and hid inside the Oratrice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale. She told Furina to fool the masses so that she could enact the plan to save Fontaine.
She also warned her that if her identity were revealed, the plan would fail, which would doom the people of Fontaine. So Furina’s job was to carry out the actual plans of the true Archon so that the Heavenly Principles could be deceived.
Furina did as Focalors told her. She successfully maintained her disguise and fooled people for 500 years. During this time, Focalors began accumulating the necessary Indementium to enact her plan.
After Childe’s disappearance in Meropide Fortress, Arlecchino investigated Furina. She saw her playing with a cat and used that moment to try and steal her Gnosis. But she was shocked to find it missing.
Arlecchino also felt that there was a curse on her. Also, when she saw Furina begging for mercy, she thought that the behavior was uncharacteristic of an Archon. This made Arlecchino conclude that she wasn’t Focalors and that the Gnosis was hidden elsewhere.
Eventually, Focalors was put on trial for the prophecy of the original sin/ cataclysm that the Heavenly Principles had cursed Fontaine with. Gradually, Neuvillette and the Traveler realize that Furina is only a decoy.
Later, Furina got put on trial to compel her to tell all the secrets. But by then, Focalors had acquired enough Indemnitium to fulfill her sentence. So she killed herself. Thus removing the Hydro Archon from the prophecy, which foretold the demise of Fontaine due to rising water levels.
Also, this prevented Fontaine’s people from devolving into Oceanids. However, those who were devolved before the sacrifice couldn’t return. When Focalors was sentenced to death, she gave up her authority as the Hydro Archon to Neuvillette.
After Focalors’ demise and the destruction of the Hydro Archon’s Divine Throne, Furina abdicated and now lives her life as an ordinary human. So she isn’t dead yet. But since she has no powers, she will die as a human.
Furina’s ending is tragic, yet she finds peace in staying as a human. Her people (of Fontaine) are now not bound by the prophecy which foretold their destruction.
Also, she doesn’t have to carry the lonely burden of protecting her people by ensuring that no one gets to know about Focalors’ actual plan.
What do you think of this ending of Furina? Do you think she deserved this tragic ending? What about Focalors? Do you agree with her actions?
