The four-season run of Barry finally came to an end with a fitting finale. Barry spent the entire series trying to convince people he was good, and ironically that’s what was portrayed in The Mask Collector movie at the end of the series.
Sally frees herself from her toxic partner and gives John a better life. However, John never gets to know what his father was like and receives solace in connecting with the fake father figure in the movie.
There is no salvation for Barry because of his unhinged actions that killed many. However, history doesn’t always uphold the truth, and that’s what the finale shows us.
So let’s check out the ending of Barry together as the titular character receives a peculiar end that fans have polarizing opinions about.
Barry Ending Explained
The final episode of Barry shows Sally confessing to John that she and Barry are fugitives. Fuches offers Hank a deal that if the latter admits to killing Cristobal, Fuches would disappear. A shootout occurs on Hank’s refusal, and he does not make it out alive. Fuchs, John, and Sally are spared their lives.
The next scene shows Barry’s pitstop at a gun shop where a disinterested employee hands the frenzied man a gun with no questions asked. Barry arrives heavily armed, but only when the action is over. Fuchs is seen protecting John from witnessing the carnage around.
All Fuches wanted to do was kill Barry, but he gives up on it and allows the latter to leave unharmed with his family.
As Barry, Sally, and John stop at a motel, Barry becomes even more delusional and tells Sally that he was redeemed. He is manipulating the pastor podcasts to serve his own means. Sally urges Barry that it’s time for him to confess, but he is adamant. That night, Sally leaves with John, and Barry tries to search for her in vain.
Barry suspects she is at Gene’s place, so he goes over, shouting for them. Gene’s talent agent, Tom, informs him his family isn’t there.
Thus, Barry has lost everything he had. Realization dawns, and he is ready to confess, so he asks Tom to call the police on him. Gene bursts out from his hiding place and shoots Barry.
There is another time leap of eight years or so next, and Sally is now a high school theater director. A teenage John watches the performance from the crowd. Apparently, a movie has been released based on Barry, and it honors him as a martyr. John watches the movie despite Sally’s disapproval and is happy to remember his own version of his father.
What Happens to Sally at the End of Barry?
By the end of Barry, Sally has finally picked up the reins to her own life and deserted Barry with John. She is nowhere to be found until a time skip after Barry’s death.
She is a high school theater director and has been able to make a living with her son. After one of her shows is over, she rejects advances from another teacher. While she is free from Barry, she will never be free from the experiences and trauma she has faced in his wake.
Will Barry Receive a Season 5?
No, Barry will not receive a fifth season. According to Hader, the series ends in season 4. “I don’t even think I’ve ever referred to it as the ‘series finale’ when we’re working on the last episode. It’s just the end of the story; you know what I mean?”
The Mask Collector Explained
At the end of Barry, we see that John is watching a movie based on his father, but it is highly inaccurate. The movie is named “The Mask Collector,” and it stars Jim Cummings as Barry.
In the world of Barry, Warner Bros makes the movie based on the murder of Janice Moss. However, the studio was keen to portray Barry as the main character while Gene would serve as the main villain.
Gene feels this is glamorizing a psychopath and disrespecting Janice, but his efforts are in vain. However, since he was the one who had killed Barry rather than wait for the man to confess, he was inevitably made the villain.
In The Mask Collector, Cousineau is depicted as villainous with tides to the underworld. He kills Janice in the movie and forces Barry to cover it up before killing Barry as well.
