Curious messages are being sent online to companies like PlayStation, Sony, Ubisoft, Epic Games, etc. Many people are upset that they can’t use their PS4 console because the servers aren’t working.
As a result, there are rumors of PS4 servers shutting down. But are these rumors true?
PS4 servers are not shutting down. As of January 5, 2024, there has been no official confirmation from Sony or PlayStation. The rumors spread because the PS4 servers were down for a while. Also, since Sony still supports PS3, the possibility of PS4 getting shut down before that is slim.
What Is Going on with the PS4 Servers? Are They Shutting Down?
Sometimes, Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN), which is its online gaming service, suffers outages due to multiple reasons. This could be due to higher traffic, especially during the holiday season, or other things.
As a result, the servers might be down for its consoles for a while. This time, it was PS4 that was majorly affected.
Since this outage wasn’t officially acknowledged by the official PlayStation account on Twitter/ X, many assumed that PS4 was on its last legs and would get shut down soon.
After all, since Sony introduced its PS5 in late 2020, it’s all anyone can talk about. The console became an instant hit, and the infamous inventory shortages are still continuing amid surging consumer demand.
As such, it’s normal to wonder if PS4, which was released in 2013, is on its last breath. However, that’s a false rumor. Sony has yet to announce the discontinuation of PS4 server support officially.
In fact, the company indicated last year that it might continue developing games for the PS4, even alongside its plans for PS5-exclusive titles.
Furthermore, despite initially announcing the closure of the PS3 digital storefront in 2021, Sony later reversed its decision due to fan backlash, ensuring the PS3 servers and store’s continued operation in 2023.
Sony has also demonstrated ongoing support for older consoles, including the 2006-released PS3.
Given this track record, it appears unlikely that Sony would abruptly cease support for the PS4, especially when the PS3 remains operational.
Also, rest assured that if such a decision gets made, it will be officially announced through various Sony and PlayStation channels, and adequate time will be given to users to adjust to the news.
As for the PS4 outages that many people are reporting, it should get resolved soon. Also, as per the PSN website, all services are up and running at the time of writing.
If you are still facing issues accessing PS4, try asking the Ask PlayStation Twitter/ X account for help. Generally, the problems get solved fast.
