A beloved character from the second season of “You,” Ellie Alves, played by Jenna Ortega, left fans wondering about her fate after the series’ dramatic events.
Despite her absence in season three, Ellie’s storyline was kept open-ended, leaving viewers curious about her future interactions with Joe. But what actually happened with her? And is her absence because of “Wednesday”?
In “You” Season 2, Love schemes to frame Ellie Alves, portrayed by Jenna Ortega, for Henderson’s murder. But Joe ensures her safety by sending her to Florida and keeps sending her money by selling rare books to ensure that she remains hidden. Although absent in season three, Ellie’s storyline remains open for future seasons. Ortega’s absence in season four was due to conflicts with “Wednesday.”
What Was Ellie’s Fate in You?
In Netflix’s “You” season 2, after Love confesses to killing Delilah, she plots to frame Ellie for Henderson’s murder and stage Delilah’s demise as suicide.
While the Quinn family lawyers aimed to close the case, it would result in Ellie being taken by Child Protective Services. Joe, however, intervenes, informing Ellie of her sister Delilah’s death himself.
He ensures Ellie’s safety by sending her away to Florida with money from the Quinn business. He clandestinely supports her by selling rare books for cash, ensuring she remains hidden from the Quinn family’s reach.
While her presence isn’t seen in the third season, Joe continues to support her secretly. So, Ellie’s storyline remains unresolved, leaving the door open for her return in future seasons.
Showrunner Sera Gamble hinted at the possibility of her return, emphasizing Ellie’s ongoing connection with Joe. She said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“I don’t see why not. Ellie is still in Joe’s life. He’s sending her money. She hates him, but he is sending her money. So that door remains open for us.”
Actress Jenna Ortega has also expressed her willingness to return, praising the show’s team and her experience working on it. She said in an interview with Cosmopolitan:
“I love that [You] set. The team behind it, the writers are so witty and so funny, and then also just to work with Penn Badgley again. I had such an incredible time there that if they would like to have me back, I’m more than happy to take a few digs at Joe again.”
Jenna Ortega’s popularity has soared with her roles in hit Netflix series like “You” and “Wednesday.”
While her absence in “You” season four was due to scheduling conflicts with “Wednesday,” her significance to Netflix’s original content landscape is undeniable.
Despite missing from season four, Ellie’s return in future seasons could enrich the storyline and provide closure to her character arc.
Her comeback could explore the aftermath of her sister’s death and her dynamic with Joe, offering intriguing narrative possibilities.
But will she return in the future? After all, Jenna Ortega’s schedule is becoming more and more jam-packed as her star rises. Also, what storyline can she possibly have upon return?
