Imagine you are a billionaire… how would you diversify your wealth? Will you take the philanthropic route? Will you invest and encourage young entrepreneurs? Will you solve world issues? Or will you make dim-witted financial decisions just because you can?
Well, let’s see if the ‘Musk’eteer has an answer for us. In today’s case of things only Musk can do, we have yet another bizarre business deal.
On October 22, 2023, Elon Musk posted on his X account that he would be offering Wikipedia $1 Billion to change its name to “Dickipedia” for a period of one year. While most netizens took it as a joke, others pointed out the bare minimum expectations of billionaires to contribute to society seem to have dissipated entirely.
In another tweet, Musk also raised the question as to why Wikipedia needed donations to keep its website running. Jimmy Wales, the founder of the most extensive digital information library, Wikipedia, is yet to respond to Musk’s deal.
Elon Musk’s Outlandish $1 Billion Proposal
The billion-dollar deal sent shockwaves across X as netizens couldn’t fathom the possibility that a billionaire would ever expose the extravagant behavior of the elites. But then Elon Musk has always been an enigmatic billionaire who claims to be the people’s person. Although he could be best described as that wealthy friend who you don’t want to invite to your party, considering how outlandish their expectations could be.
Musk yet again proved that he is capable of buying anything he sets his eyes on.
When Elon Musk posted about his quid-pro-quo, it blew the normie mind, knowing that uber-rich people can give away billions of dollars just for a gag.
When one user encouraged Wikipedia to take the deal, saying– “@Wikipedia, Do it! You can always change it back after you collect,” Musk responded, “One year minimum. I mean, I’m a not fool lol.”
Musk also posted a series of comments in which he questions the intentions of the Wikimedia Foundation asking for donations from the readers. He says–
“Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation wants so much money?”
“It certainly isn’t needed to operate Wikipedia. You can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone! So, what’s the money for? Inquiring minds want to know..”
Apparently, Musk had harbored another beef with Jimmy Wales when the Wikipedia founder criticized the Tesla CEO for censoring critics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan since Musk marketed Twitter version 2.0 as a free speech platform with 0 censorship. Pointing out this irony led to a sour relationship between Wales and Musk.
