The now 33-year-old made headlines as one of the most dangerous serial killers of all time; read to know more on the case!
Who Is Lucy Letby?
The 33-year-old nurse has been found guilty of murdering seven newborns and trying to kill another six, making her the most prolific infant murderer the world has ever seen.
Lucy was acquitted of two charges of attempted murder, and the jury couldn’t reach decisions on six additional attempted murder charges involving five babies. Over a period of 18 months, included in her victims were a pair of twin siblings and two sets of triplet boys. Starting in January 2015, there was a significant uptick in the number of infants dying and experiencing serious setbacks in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital.
She aimed to take the lives of the infants while deceiving her coworkers into thinking that their deaths were due to natural causes.
Letby faced allegations of causing harm to 17 babies, including some who were only a few days old, from June 2015 to June 2016. In most instances, it’s suspected that she administered air injections, but prosecutors also alleged that she introduced insulin or excessive milk.
After 22 days of deliberation, the jury concluded that she was responsible for the deaths of seven infants and the attempted murder of six others. She was acquitted of two charges of attempted murder, while the jury was unable to come to a decision on six attempted murder charges.
What Happened to Lucy Letby?
In June 2018, Letby was formally identified as a suspect and subsequently arrested for the first time.
At the tender age of 22, Lucy Letby began her tenure in January 2012 at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital. At first glance, she appeared much like any other young nurse who had a passion for her work but deep inside lived a gruesome serial killer with dark intentions.
She alleged that the police took her from her home at 6 am while she was still in her nightgown. However, footage from police body cameras, which was released after her conviction, depicted the moment officers knocked on her door at 6:03 am. She was escorted out of her residence 11 minutes later, wearing handcuffs.
Later the prosecution contended that she fabricated this account to elicit sympathy from the jury.
Within her bedroom, investigators discovered hospital handover sheets concealed in shopping bags. A total of 257 confidential medical records were retrieved, many of which pertained to the infants she had harmed or killed. Throughout her trial at Manchester Crown Court, Lucy Letby spent nearly three weeks providing her testimony.
Why Did Lucy Letby Kill Babies?
It remains baffling why a nurse would commit such a brutal crime at a place that is considered to be the safest for any infant. However, some investigations and Lucy’s confessions on the case so far have shed some light on this.
It was revealed that Lucy had developed a crush on a male doctor of the same unit and that she would intentionally hurt the babies so that the doctor would rush into the room for help. While Lucy has straight away denied this, Lucy also told the court that the hospital was conspiring against her and blaming her for their failures.
She further went ahead and blamed the unhygienic condition of the nursery rooms and the immense pressure under which many nurses like her had to work as the reason for the killings. In fact, she alleged that someone had sabotaged the hospital, refusing all the claims of intentionally hurting and killing the babies.
However, investigations were completely antithetical to what she said, as police found several handwritten notes at her apartment. In a few notes, Lucy had scribbled what looked like confessions as she admitted being “evil” and that she was not a “good person.” She even admitted to killing the babies, according to the notes.
