Tom Jones, the talented writer behind the beloved off-Broadway musical “The Fantasticks” passed away on Friday at the age of 95 after a brave battle with cancer, according to his son Micheal.

This news led to widespread confusion, as many individuals mistook this announcement for the passing of the Welsh singer Tom Jones. The combination of the director’s name trending and the flood of “Rest in Peace” messages caused a significant stir among fans and followers alike.

Also, the news has been further confirmed by Dan Shaheen, co-producer of the renowned musical “The Fantasticks,” that Tom Jones passed away on Friday, August 11. The revered artist passed away at his residence in Sharon, Connecticut. However, there was some confusion as various social media accounts falsely circulated claims that Delilah, another iconic figure, was, indeed, dead.

His collaboration with the late composer Harvey Schmidt resulted in the creation of this iconic musical, which first premiered in Greenwich Village in 1960. The opening song, “Try to Remember,” is a timeless classic that has touched the hearts of countless audiences.

Jones will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift for generations to come.

Jones, who was born on February 17, 1928, in Littlefield, Texas, was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he had the pleasure of meeting his frequent collaborator, Schmidt.

After bravely serving his country in the Korean War, Jones moved to New York City, where he began his illustrious career in the theater world by writing for productions put on by Julius Monk. He also collaborated with composer John Donald Robb, and together they created a delightful musical western that was inspired by Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play “Les Romanesques” and called “Joy Comes to Deadhorse.”

However, it was Jones’ partnership with Schmidt that truly shone, resulting in the creation of several major musicals, such as “110 in the Shade,” “I Do! I Do!,” “Philemon,” “Celebration,” and their greatest masterpiece, “The Fantasticks.” Despite receiving mixed reviews, “The Fantasticks” managed to charm audiences and ran continuously for over 17,000 performances until 2002, making it the longest-running musical in U.S. history. Jones’s contribution to the world of theater will be sorely missed.

Tom’s first wife, Melinda, passed away on April 10, 2016 – in Cedars Sinai Hospital, LA – at the age of 75 after battling lung cancer.

When Tom and Linda were just 16 years old, they made a sacred commitment to one another and entered into the bond of marriage. Despite the challenges that came their way, including Tom’s infidelities, they persevered and remained together for an impressive 59 years.

Throughout their marriage, they were blessed with a son named Mark Woodward, who now manages Tom and helps to care for him.

However, it is worth noting that Tom also has another son named Jonathan Berkery, whom he has never had the opportunity to meet. Despite this, Tom’s love for his family endures, and he remains grateful for the time he has spent with those he holds dear.

Tom is now survived by his two sons.
