Sinead, popularly known by her stage name O’Connor is no more. Her family shared the tragic news of the demise of the 56-year-old singer. Since then, fans have been concerned about her sudden death as there were no signs of illness that the singer had suffered lately.
She was last seen interacting with her fans on Twitter, as she even shared that going back to London 23 years later made her feel extremely happy. Amid all this, what exactly happened when the singer passed away?
Did Sinead O’Connor Commit Suicide?
Right now, there seems to be no evidence to prove that Sinead committed suicide. However, her battle with depression and PTSD might have played a role in her tragic death.
Also, her family has not mentioned the exact cause of death and just shared a statement on her demise with her fans. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
For anyone who is aware of the star’s personal life, Sinead has been in depression since the passing away of her son, Shane, in 2022. The young lad apparently committed suicide, and mother Sinead never really recovered from that trauma.
It was evident that the Irish singer had a history of suicides; in the last year itself, Sinead attempted to take her life nearly 8 times. Her son’s suicide was unsettling for her as she had even shared with her fans that she feels “lost” without him. Sinead had revealed to her fans that her son was the only one who ever loved her unconditionally.
Her son, whose custody she had lost in 2013, had tragically gone missing for days before he took his life. Shane was only 17, and the reason behind his move was unclear.
“My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God,” Sinead wrote on her social media at that time.
“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”
After the death of her son, Sinead herself, through a series of tweets, revealed her plans of “following her son” by committing suicide. She mentioned that her life had become meaningless without him and that it was no point living without him.
Her declining mental health was concerning among her fans as even when she was hospitalized for her suicide attempt, Sinead apologized to her fans for her actions but also stated that she would, however, soon join her son. “But I’m going to find Shane. This is just a delay,” she wrote.
Not just her son, even after a medical procedure after her menopause called Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) had taken a toll on her mental and physical health; in an interview, she shared how she had attempted suicide in the past, several times, she even revealed of “losing her mind” after the procedure.
Sinead’s struggle with depression, perhaps, roots from her childhood trauma too. She had openly shared about the physical and mental abuse her mother implied on her and her sibling growing up. Despite this fact, Sinead revealed she misses her mother horribly and couldn’t wait to meet her again in heaven.

Sinead made a big splash in the early 1990s with her heart-wrenching song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was written by the talented Prince. Her unique look, with her shaved head and striking features, set her apart from the crowd.
