Raise your hand if any point in your teenage years. You prayed for a magical transformation. We all couldn’t wait to get out of the puberty cocoon and get hit with instant hotness and attractiveness.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is like every teenager’s prayer answered when the main protagonist Belly is suddenly considered “attractive” one summer. The series is an adaptation of the book of the same name, created by the author Jenny Han. She is also the author of XO Kitty, harping on the similar subtext of coming-of-age. The story might be a cliche, but the execution is worth binge-watching.
Brief Summary so far:
Belly, short for Isabella, visits a small town every summer along with her mom, Laurel. They spend the vacation with her mom’s best friend and her two sons. Belly used to be a typical teenager who never felt seen. But one summer, she gets noticed by a random shopkeeper. Cut to flashback, she wore glasses and had braces. And now, she has transformed into “desirable beauty standards” — basically, she got rid of her glasses and removed her braces.
The rest of the season explores the dynamics between Belly and two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. Belly always had a definite crush on Conrad, but she is also getting sparks from Jeremiah, who is more of her best friend.
Then there is the eternal friendship aspect between Laurel and Susannah. This unwavering and unhinged friendship has a more profound storyline when it is revealed that Susannah is battling with cancer.
In the finale, Belly is at crossroads between the two brothers. But at the final moment, it is Conrad who shows up to be her dance partner at the ball. And on the darker side of the end, Jeremiah misses the dance because he finds out that his mother has cancer and breaks down by the pool.

Belly also might lose her beloved summer house and the countless memories associated with it due to a new threat. She assembles her friends to fight to save the house. The story will unravel through the eyes of teenagers who are navigating their present feelings while anticipating their future.
