Mark Ruffalo has now revealed how he got to play the big green aka the Hulk and how MCU confirmed that he got the role.
In the latest book of “The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”, Ruffalo revisits the story behind his casting as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Avengers film and into the MCU.
How Mark Ruffalo Got The Role Of Hulk In The MCU
After going through the casting process, Mark Ruffalo got a call from his agent saying “Wake up tomorrow at 4 in the morning. Look out of your window. If there’s a limbo there, You’re doing the part. If not, Go back to bed.”
This mysterious message left Ruffalo sleepless and boom, The next day, He woke up at 4 as said by the agent, and to his surprise, there’s a limbo.
Mark Ruffalo said, “I was happy, and I was scared to death.”
Now let’s dive into the cool part.
The limbo present is actually Marvel’s agent, Who came to assist Ruffalo to San Diego’s Comic-Con.
Imagine having no clue whatsoever that he’s about to presume his role as the Hulk in the Avengers and promote the movie alongside the other cast members in the event.
As expected, They both took a plane to San Diego to confirm his casting and promote the film at 2010’s International Comic-Con.

Joss Whedon’s Help
It turns out even before Ruffalo got the role of Hulk, Joss Whedon was helping out the star.
In Abrams Books’ The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ruffalo recalled how Joss helped him from the inside on Mark’s role as the Hulk.
The reason Mark Ruffalo signed in the first place is because of Joss Whedon. Yes, The actor has much respect towards the writer/director of the Avengers film as he convinced Mark Ruffalo to close the deal with Marvel.
Ruffalo exclaimed that Joss Whedon said, “Well, I’m not supposed to do this but I’ll give you half the script and all the Banner/Hulk scenes I’ve written.”
The actor also expressed his love towards the introduction of Bruce Banner’s scene in the Avengers.
Mark Ruffalo said, “I loved what he did with it(Hulk). I loved the humor. Banner’s introduction was amazing. I felt like it was a fresh take on this character we hadn’t seen that I could fit nicely into. So I said, Let’s do it.”
As we all knew, Avengers became a box office hit and a huge milestone for Marvel which lead to the massive universe they’ve built today.
Why There’s No Hulk Stand-Alone Film
The Incredible Hulk is one of Marvel’s most known and popular superheroes but why won’t they make a solo Hulk film?
The reason why there’s no stand-alone Hulk movie is because of Universal Studios.
Similar to Sony, Marvel’s situation on Spider-Man, Hulk’s character rights are currently shared with Universal and they don’t play well with Marvel.
While Sony and Marvel have some sort of understanding between them, Marvel and Universal don’t share the same.
Ruffalo spoke about it with Variety saying, “He and Disney approached Universal for a stand-alone Hulk film but there’s no chance of it happening.”

Mark Ruffalo has started in a total of 4 films as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the MCU.
Apart from Avengers, He starred in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor Ragnarok, Avengers: InfinitiWar, and Avengers: End Game.
Due to the ongoing deal between Marvel and Universal, Ruffalo is yet to star in another fixture as the Hulk.
This brings us to the much anticipated She-Hulk series. Mark Ruffalo will be reprising his role once again in the MCU as the big green monster aka the Hulk in Disney’s own streaming service.
She-Hulk will be having two main leads with introductions to several other Marvel characters and is expected to release in 2022 in Disney+.
