Geralt of Rivia has been the face of The Witcher franchise for years, whether it’s in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, CD Projekt Red’s iconic games, or Henry Cavill’s portrayal in Netflix’s adaptation.

So naturally, fans are eager to know if Geralt will make an appearance in The Witcher 4.

With Ciri confirmed as the protagonist, it’s clear the series is heading into a new chapter. But is Geralt gone for good?

Yes, Geralt will return in The Witcher 4, but he won’t be the main character. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Geralt will appear in the game in a smaller role. While the legendary Witcher passes the torch to his adoptive daughter Ciri, his presence ensures a strong connection to the series’ roots.

Geralt’s Role in The Witcher 4: What to Expect

There are no gods here, only monsters ⚔️

We're thrilled to reveal the first look at #TheWitcherIV — our upcoming single-player open-world RPG. It marks the beginning of a new saga with Ciri as a protagonist, embarking on her own journey to become a professional monster slayer.… pic.twitter.com/Xu3YleR2iv

The spotlight is officially on Ciri in The Witcher 4, but Geralt fans don’t need to worry about his absence.

Longtime voice actor Doug Cockle confirmed that Geralt will return, although the game “won’t focus on him this time.”

This aligns with CD Projekt Red’s statement from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which marked the conclusion of Geralt’s personal saga.

Geralt’s role is expected to be limited, likely as a mentor or supporting character in Ciri’s story.

Playing as an older Ciri in The Witcher 4, WE ALL EXPECTED THAT AFTER THE WITCHER 3… IT'S NOT A SURPRISE.

CDPR said Geralt as the lead was complete (they also said it wouldnt be called The Witcher 4 which ughhhh…). The Witcher 3 wraps up in a way that sets up Ciri.

Ciri has already been established as a capable witcher, but Geralt’s experience and wisdom might guide her through the challenges of her new journey.

Geralt’s voice actor says Geralt will be in The Witcher 4, but “Witcher 4 wont’ focus on Geralt. It’s not about him.” This confirms Geralt won’t be the main character. Source: https://t.co/Wf6mVW9TaQ #Witcher4 pic.twitter.com/Z0hMkQQ3WX

In an interview, CD Projekt Red lore designer Cian Maher hinted at Geralt’s enduring presence, stating, “Geralt will probably be around for a long time… The capacity in which he does is… we’ll see.”

The cinematic trailer for The Witcher 4 teased Geralt’s involvement. While Ciri battles monsters in a haunting forest, a familiar voice at the end has fans convinced it’s the White Wolf himself. This subtle nod reassures players that Geralt’s legacy will remain integral to the story, even if he’s no longer the main character.

Why Is Ciri Taking Center Stage in Witcher 4?

Passing the torch to Ciri makes perfect sense for the franchise. Her character arc in The Witcher 3 positioned her as a fully-fledged witcher with unique abilities like Elder Blood-fueled magic and dimension-hopping.

These powers, combined with her fierce independence, make her an exciting protagonist for the new trilogy.

Ciri’s rise allows the series to explore new perspectives while honoring its rich lore. Her journey as a professional monster slayer promises moral dilemmas, intense battles, and the deep storytelling fans love.

While Geralt’s tale was legendary, it’s time for the next generation to shine.

What do you think? Are you excited for Ciri’s story, or do you wish Geralt had stayed in the spotlight?

Averagebeing’s Take: Geralt’s shift to a supporting role feels like a natural evolution. His story has been told, and it’s time for the franchise to grow but I don’t know how this will play out.
