Mystery lovers worldwide are always on the hunt to watch something new. While Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s stories are well-known, others tend to slide under the carpet and are not popular with the broader world.
Grantchester is one such example, among others. The show, set in the 1950s, first grabbed attention in 2014 when it began airing.
The series, which is running till now, is set in the village of the same name and first featured James Norton as Sidney Chambers, the Anglican vicar who becomes a mystery solver with Robson Green’s Detective Inspector Geordie Keating. Over the years, Tom Brittney replaced James Norton’s Sidney Chambers as William Davenport.
Now, the show has been running for eight seasons. So fans are asking- Will there be a season 9 of Grantchester? Yes, there will be. Tom Brittney is returning in season 9 as William Davenport as well. But this will be his last season, and Rishi Nair will replace him as the lead as Vicar Alphy Kotteram.
Will Grantchester Have a Season 9?
Grantchester, the series, is based on James Runcie’s short stories called The Grantchester Mysteries. It has been on air since 2014, and Tom Brittney took over from James Norton in season 4 (2019). A season 9 has been announced, and Brittney, who plays William Davenport in the show, will return. But this will be his last season.
Season 9 will also see Rishi Nair as Vicar Alphy Kotteram take over from Brittney. Filming is underway on season 9 of the ITV, and MASTERPIECE show Grantchester. Brittney had this to say about his exit from the show after almost five years:
“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for. I’ll miss it more than anything. But it’s time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I’m so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family.”
Executive Producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd was sad at Brittney’s departure. But she also expressed joy at Rishi Nair’s upcoming role in the show. She said:
“It’s the end of an era as we say an emotional farewell to Tom Brittney. He’s been extraordinary in the past five series, and we’ll miss him very much. But audiences can look forward to a new and fantastically entertaining chapter as we welcome Rishi Nair to the series.”
What does Rishi Nair have to say about joining the show in season 9? He’s excited and thankful. The actor said:
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Grantchester. The welcome and support I’ve received from everyone has been overwhelming. The success of the show and the reason we are here for a ninth season is a testament to all the people that have previously worked on it.”
But what will season 9 of the show be about? It’s 1961, and things are going well for Geordie and Will. But when Will gets a life-changing offer, he will struggle with leaving Grantchester and Geordie behind. On the other hand, Geordie will have to deal with the growing conflict between Esme and Cathy and his personal loss.
On the other hand, Reverend Alphy Kotteram distrusts authority and doesn’t want to get into murder investigations. But soon, he and Geordie will discover they have much in common. Also, Alphy will have to make peace with the fact that in Grantchester, murder is almost an annual business.
Grantchester airs on MASTERPIECE on ITV1 and ITVX in the U.K and on PBS in the U.S.
