Succession has been a chart-bursting success for HBO as it successfully did what few shows can do in this day and age- keep audiences glued for the drama.
Comparisons to The Sopranos have been made, with many also calling it the modern-day Game of Thrones, but the show has carved out an audience for itself that’s different from the rest.
The Roy family drama reached its height in season 4, and the ratings for each episode kept climbing higher from the previous one. The show finally aired its series finale on May 28, and there have been unending conversations about the ending and how the titular characters were written. However, there’s still one question jumping out, unsaid and yet visible from the fans- is a season 5 possible?
The ending of season 4 has seemingly brought forth more questions than answers, and as a result, fans wonder if there will be another season to further the storylines. While various actors on the show, as well as show creator Jesse Armstrong, had confirmed- season 4 is the last, an inkling of hope remains.
How Did Succession Season 4 End?
Succession season 4 finale ensured that Waystar Royco had a new CEO, but the path to reach there was full of melodrama, dramatic twists, and sibling rivalries that finally reached their height. Tom and Matsson take over Waystar Royco, leaving fans shocked.
Changes are coming as a result. Tom wants to keep Greg while axing Frank, Karl, and Hugo. He also seems interested in ensuring Karolina and Gerri stay on.
Regarding the Roy siblings, who earlier in the episode were contemplating again about their favorite topic- who does their father, Logan, want as the CEO, it’s quite a morose matter of business.
Ultimately, Shiv and Tom ride out of Waystar as she puts her hand in his. It looks like she is willing to give their relationship another try. But it’s also a stark reminder of how even though she tried to play the cutthroat game, she failed to win and had to settle for a position that echoes her mother’s.
Roman isn’t faring better as he goes to a bar and seems to be stuck in sadness with a hint of joy because he isn’t tied to Waystar anymore. But the real tragedy is Kendall.
At the beginning of season 1, he was the rockstar poised to take over the company. But in the end, he is at rock bottom and doesn’t have any notable personal relationships to fall back on. Yet, with the shot of him looking out at the sea, he may dip his toes into a new venture. As such, season 4’s finale was an ending, yet it could also be a beginning.
Will Succession Get A Season 5? Actor Thinks It’s Possible
In an interview with The New Yorker, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong revealed that he always had an ending in mind because he wasn’t particularly keen on the show going on and on for ages.
Instead, he wanted to go out strong. If that was his wish, he got it. The show has made a mark in the zeitgeist, and its brilliant writing has made a mark on people’s minds.
However, actor Kieran Culkin, who played Roman Roy, once suggested that a season 5 can happen. In an interview with Variety, the star said creator Jesse Armstrong had more plans.
“Jesse told us at the season’s start that he thought this was the last one. And then he explained the entire season to me. When he finished, I said, ‘Well, that kind of sounds like the end,’ and he goes, ‘Well, it could be, but…’ and then he just spat out three ideas that he said were just off the top of his head, and that were all brilliant ideas for a fifth season.”

As such, it looks like there’s a sliver of door open for a return. However, as of now, there’s no official news from HBO about a possible continuation. So season 4 is the end. But who knows, there could be a revival or continuation a few years down the line. After all, The Sopranos got a prequel show titled The Saints of Newark.
Succession is available on HBO and HBO Max.
