If anyone had asked me if Scott Pilgrim, of all films, would get an animated adaptation, I would have probably said no.

But the animated adaptation is here, and everyone is loving it! So now, the question is, will there be a follow-up season?

As of November 21, 2023, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime for season 2. However, the writer/producer of the anime, BenDavid Grabinski, has expressed interest in continuing it. In an interview with CBR, Grabinski said, “There is definitely potential for more storytelling here.”

Will Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Get a Season 2?

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a Netflix anime based on the graphic novels by the acclaimed Bryan Lee O’Malley. The show follows the titular character’s mission to win over Ramona Flowers by battling her seven evil exes.

The anime comes after the 2010 film by Edgar Wright called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. It grossed only $49 million on a budget between $60–85 million. As expected, no one thought this comic would ever get another chance.

Really need to hang this up lol.

Thankfully, over the years, the film and the graphic novel it was based on garnered a cult following. Now, that cult has gone mainstream. This resulted in the graphic novel getting a new light in the form of an anime series.

In an interview with CBR, Bryan Lee O’Malley and writer/producer BenDavid Grabinski talked about how they got the anime greenlit. The writer said:

“People are still reading the books. There is a new generation of people who keep discovering it. I just felt lucky that it had enough of a base for someone to justify making this show.”

Furthermore, he thanked Netflix and the people who worked on the movie for being excited about an animated reboot. Grabinski said:

“The original people who made the movie were interested in doing an anime version. Netflix was excited about the idea. It was just one of those weird things where all these things happened simultaneously.”

The series premiered to great acclaim, and now fans want more. So, will there be a season 2? Currently, there has been no official announcement from Netflix regarding this.

However, CBR asked if the makers were thinking beyond the first season. To this, the writer replied that there’s potential for more. He said:

“We haven’t thought too hard about what happens next. There is definitely potential for more storytelling here. I feel like what we have done in this show opens doors I had never even thought of.”

Finished Scott Pilgrim takes off

But he also said that the first season does have a definitive ending. As per Grabinski:

“But we put every part of our effort into making the best story we could, that we thought had a really good ending… We love the world, and we love all of it, but we just tried to make the best season we could.”

As such, it looks like the show was made with one season in mind. If there’s a second season, it will depend on how good of a viewership it gets.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is now streaming on Netflix.

Are you planning on watching Scott Pilgrim Takes Off? Does it deserve another season?
