Since the GTA 6 trailer was released, everyone who has played any GTA game is hyped.
Even though the game is still a few years away, fans are already planning to play with each other.
However, that might only be possible in some cases if Rockstar Games allows GTA 6 to be crossplay compatible. So, will it be?
Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and Rockstar Games haven’t officially announced that GTA 6 will be crossplay compatible. None of GTA 6’s predecessors are crossplay enabled, and it seems like Rockstar isn’t going to change that. The game will be released initially on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and later on PC.
What Is Cross-Platform Play?
Crossplay in gaming lets players enjoy a game on various platforms. Imagine playing Minecraft on your PC while your friend plays it on Xbox One – cross-play makes this possible.
Additionally, crossplay often includes cross-saving, allowing gamers to move their game progress smoothly from one platform to another. Thus making it convenient to transition between devices.
It should be noted that GTA 5, launched more than ten years ago, didn’t come with the cross-play function and hasn’t been upgraded to include it.
Will GTA 6 Come With Crossplay?
While there hasn’t been an official statement from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and Rockstar Games regarding crossplay in GTA 6, it appears that the answer is leaning toward a negative.
Considering Rockstar’s historical approach, it’s unlikely that GTA 6 will feature crossplay at launch, drawing from the studio’s strategy with GTA V.
GTA V, released in 2013, has gradually expanded its player base, primarily due to its engaging multiplayer mode, GTA Online. However, it’s noteworthy that GTA Online does not offer crossplay functionality.
Despite being available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, players can only team up with friends on the same family of hardware, such as PS4 and PS5 or Xbox Series X and Xbox One. So it is console-compatible.
Unfortunately, those on PC cannot join players from other platforms, and this absence of crossplay persisted even with the next-gen update for GTA V.
Considering this historical context, it seems plausible that GTA 6 will follow suit and not include crossplay upon its release.
While many contemporary games support crossplay by default, Rockstar has yet to introduce this feature into its iconic open-world series.
Right now, GTA 6 is releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It will probably be released way later on PC. After all, as user slop_drobbler explained on the GTA 6 subreddit, this will let them sell the game twice.
They said:
“It seems very unlikely imo, staggering release of the PC version not only allows them to potentially sell the same game twice, but a later release enables the devs more time to optimise for a wider range of hardware, as well as developing new.”
So, everyone expecting crossplay in GTA 6 or GTA 6 Online should rein in their hopes.
Nevertheless, anticipation for GTA 6 with crossplay has been building for a while, with more than a decade separating it from its predecessor.
Whether or not GTA 6 will eventually embrace cross-play is a topic that will undoubtedly continue to pique gamers’ interest worldwide as they await the game’s highly anticipated release.
